... Read moreHey everyone! 👋 As an artist deeply in love with the anime style, I often get asked about how I create my pieces. My original post was just a quick peek, but I wanted to dive deeper into what makes anime art so captivating and share some of my go-to techniques. It's truly a unique art form that combines storytelling with distinctive visual elements, often characterized by its expressive characters and dynamic compositions. When we talk about 'what is anime art,' we're generally referring to a style originating from Japanese animation and manga. It's known for specific characteristics like large, emotive eyes, vibrant colors (though my sketches are often black and white!), exaggerated facial expressions, and often stylized body proportions. It allows for incredible flexibility in conveying emotion and action, which is why I find it so appealing! Let me walk you through some of the fundamental techniques I've learned on my own journey, similar to the process behind those black and white line art sketches you might have seen. 1. Mastering Line Art: For me, everything starts with clean, confident line art. The strength of anime drawings often lies in their outlines. I usually begin with a light pencil sketch, then refine it with ink. Playing with line weight – making lines thicker in some areas (like under the chin or for shadows) and thinner in others – really adds depth and dimension. This is crucial for making elements pop, whether it's the edge of a character's messy hair or the frame of their glasses. 2. Understanding Proportions & Anatomy: Anime proportions can vary greatly, from super-deformed chibis to more realistic styles. For my character sketches, I often aim for a slightly exaggerated look, focusing on making the head expressive. Think about basic shapes to construct the head and body. For instance, the character with round glasses and multiple ear piercings you saw, I started with a simple circle for the head and then built the features around it. Don't be afraid to use references! 3. Expressive Facial Features: This is where anime truly shines! Eyes: They are the windows to the soul, and in anime, they're often the focal point. Practice drawing different eye shapes to convey various emotions – wide and sparkling for joy, narrowed for anger, or half-closed for contemplation. Hair: From spiky to flowing, hair adds so much personality. When I drew the character with messy hair and a suit, I focused on creating strands that gave it a natural, slightly disheveled look, rather than just a solid block. Accessories: Don't forget the details! Glasses, ear piercings, or even a tie on a suit (like in one of my sketches) can add so much character and visual interest. 4. Basic Shading Techniques: Even in black and white line art, shading plays a huge role in creating dimension. I primarily use a technique similar to cel-shading, which involves distinct blocks of shadow rather than smooth gradients. Think about your light source: where is the light coming from? Then, apply shadows consistently on the opposite side. This simple step can transform a flat drawing into something with volume. 5. Practice and Persistence: Honestly, the best technique is consistent practice! Sketching regularly, even just quick doodles, helps build muscle memory and develops your unique style. Don't be afraid to experiment and draw what you love. My own journey has been about constantly trying new things and learning from every sketch. I hope these insights into anime art techniques give you a clearer picture and inspire you to pick up your pencil and start drawing! It’s a rewarding process, and I can't wait to see what you create. Keep experimenting and have fun with it! #animeartlovers #animeartwork #artist #drawings

A sketchbook open on green grass with daisies, displaying pencil drawings of basic figure gesture studies. Overlaid text reads 'art practice' and 'Gesture studies', with 'SPRING' at the top.
Three figure drawings illustrating pose dynamics: a 'flat' basic pose, a 'dynamic pose' with more movement, and a detailed figure 'with muscles' showing anatomical structure.
Two figure drawings demonstrating different perspectives: one from a 'straight view' and another from a 'view from above', showing how angles affect the pose.
