“The Compliment and the Critic”

“The Compliment and the Critic”

Last week, I ran into someone I hadn’t seen in years.

We hugged, caught up, and just as we were about to part, she said—

“You’ve always been so beautiful, inside and out.”

For a second, I didn’t know what to do with it.

Was it true? Was it just politeness?

Old me would have replayed that line over and over, trying to decode what she really meant.

Then, the very next day, I overheard a stranger mutter something sharp about me under their breath.

And suddenly, the compliment and the criticism were standing side by side in my head,

arguing about which one was more real.

That’s when it hit me—

neither was about me at all.

The compliment came from someone who probably saw herself as someone good and beautiful,

and so she recognized that goodness in others.

The criticism?

Likely born from the other person’s own bad day, their stress, their unhealed edges.

Both were mirrors, reflecting the people holding them.

Not the truth of who I am.

And once I saw it that way,

I stopped trying to control the reflections.

I stopped bending myself into shapes to keep people from misunderstanding me.

Because the truth is—

I’m the only one who actually gets to live inside this version of me.

And that version deserves peace.

... Read moreIn our daily interactions, compliments and criticisms often affect us deeply, shaping our self-image and emotions. However, understanding that these external reflections are more about the observers than about us can liberate us from unnecessary emotional turmoil. When someone offers a compliment, such as "You’ve always been so beautiful, inside and out," it often mirrors their own positive self-view or the light they recognize within themselves. Conversely, criticism or harsh judgments typically stem from the critic's own internal struggles, stresses, or unhealed wounds rather than an objective truth about us. This duality between praise and critique highlights a vital concept: people do not see us as we truly are, but through the lens of their own experiences, beliefs, hopes, and pains. Therefore, learning to take neither compliments nor criticisms too personally is key to maintaining emotional balance. By holding these reflections lightly and with curiosity, we open space for self-compassion and avoid the trap of overanalyzing or internalizing others’ opinions. Achieving freedom in this context means unhooking our sense of worth from the ever-shifting and subjective viewpoints of those around us. This freedom comes not from external achievements or escaping challenges but from embracing our authentic selves without bending to fit others’ expectations. It means becoming "unshaken, unedited, and unmoved by noise," as described in the insightful reflections featured in the article. Such a mindset encourages us to recognize that true self-worth must come from within. When we accept that we are the only ones living in our personal version of reality, deserving peace and kindness, we empower ourselves to live confidently and authentically. This internal validation is foundational for personal growth, resilience, and genuine happiness. In practice, cultivating this perspective can involve regular self-reflection, mindfulness, and compassionate self-talk. Surrounding ourselves with supportive and understanding people, setting boundaries to protect our mental well-being, and engaging in activities that reinforce self-love can also fortify this inner strength. Ultimately, this approach aligns with the hashtags highlighted in the original article, such as #SelfWorthMatters, #BeYourOwnValidation, and #ConfidenceFromWithin. Embracing these ideals helps us navigate life with greater grace, peace, and freedom, becoming less reactive to the "mirrors" that compliments and criticism represent and more connected to the truth of who we really are.

how to silence your inner critic
Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy. When we try to do something positive or reach a goal the voice in our head shuts us down telling us we're not good enough. Our brains have a bias towards the negative so we tend to focus on that especially if we've had a lot of negative reinforcement
