Sympathy vs. Empathy

Charlie once said: “I can’t stand the word empathy. I think empathy is a made-up, New Age term that does a lot of damage. Sympathy is a better word, because empathy means you are actually feeling what another person felt, and no one can feel what another person feels.”

What he was pointing out is simple but profound: empathy, as it’s often used today, can blur the line between truly helping someone and simply projecting our own feelings onto their pain. It's about acknowledging their pain while maintaining my own emotional boundaries, which ultimately makes me more effective in offering comfort. And what about apathy? It’s useful to throw that into the mix as a stark contrast. Apathy, of course, is the complete lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern. While empathy and sympathy are about connection and caring, apathy is about disconnection. Understanding the difference between empathy and sympathy helps us lean into meaningful connection, ensuring we're not just indifferent to others' plights. It's about finding that sweet spot where we are genuinely present and supportive without falling into the trap of believing we can perfectly replicate another's internal world. For me, embracing sympathy feels like a more honest and sustainable way to show up for people in their times of need. It’s about active compassion, not an illusion of shared suffering.
