“Going for a northern lights hunt, but ending up making shots of the famous Skógafoss. Night was freezing cold, below -6 degrees, all in ice, and the spraying water from the waterfall has made ice on the camera lens. But, this still came out. The lens is f4 and the nightsky was superdark, so brightness had to be, despite illumination, put up quite a lot,..also denosing, since iso was over moderately high” 🌌💙

Located in southern Iceland, Skógafoss is a stunning waterfall that drops 60 meters (197 feet) from a rocky cliff. This natural wonder is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Iceland.

Things to Do:

✨Hike the stairs to the top of the falls for panoramic views

✨Walk to the base of the falls and feel the mist on your face

✨Explore the surrounding black sand beach and take in the unique landscapes

✨Visit the nearby Skógafoss Museum to learn about the area's history and geology

💙Best time to visit: Summer for warmer weather and longer days, winter for a serene and peaceful atmosphere

💙Be prepared for changing weather conditions and potential rain

💙Look out for the single rainbow that often appears on sunny days

... Read moreAfter my unforgettable night shoot at Skógafoss, I learned so much about capturing its magic in extreme cold. If you're planning a winter photography trip to Iceland and hope to catch the vibrant blue light illuminating the falls or the starry sky above, here are a few things I wish I knew beforehand to make sure you get some truly good shots. First, battery life is your enemy! Cold drains camera batteries incredibly fast. I always carry spares, kept warm in an inside pocket close to my body until I need them. For those long exposures needed in the dark, a sturdy tripod is non-negotiable – the notorious Icelandic wind can be brutal and blur your photos. And speaking of lenses freezing, a lens hood helps a bit, but also bring a soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe off any ice or mist that forms. Don't be afraid to push your ISO a bit to get enough light, but remember to denoise in post-processing afterward, just like I did. And always, always shoot in RAW! It gives you so much more flexibility for editing those dark, icy scenes, especially when trying to bring out details in the starry sky or the subtle hues of that beautiful blue light. Beyond just camera gear, staying warm is absolutely crucial. You're talking about below -6 degrees Celsius, with waterfall spray adding to the chill, creating an incredibly freezing cold atmosphere. Layering is key: start with thermal base layers, add a fleece mid-layer, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Don't forget warm, waterproof gloves (perhaps even thin liner gloves for easier camera operation), a beanie that covers your ears, and sturdy waterproof hiking boots with excellent grip. The paths around Skógafoss can get incredibly slippery with ice, so microspikes or crampons for your boots are a literal lifesaver. Trust me, I almost took a tumble or two! Visiting Skógafoss in winter, especially at night, is an unforgettable experience, but safety should always be your top priority. Always check weather and road conditions before you head out. The wind can pick up fast, and snow can limit visibility significantly. If you're hunting for the Northern Lights near Skógafoss, it's an amazing backdrop! Find a spot away from any artificial light (though the waterfall itself might be lit, as mine was with stunning vibrant blue light). Use an app to track aurora activity and cloud cover. Patience is your best friend. Even if the lights don't show, the starry sky over Skógafoss is a spectacle in itself, sometimes with a faint arc of light adding to the dramatic scene. And don't just rush off after dark! In the daylight, hiking the stairs to the top gives you a completely different panoramic perspective, even with the icy steps. Exploring the black sand beach nearby is also a unique experience, but be mindful of the ocean waves – they can be powerful and unpredictable. While the Skógafoss Museum is great for history, sometimes just standing at the base, feeling the mist (even if it's icy!), and taking in the sheer scale of the falls is the most profound experience. Every visit, whether day or night, summer or winter, offers something truly special.
