iOS 18 Features Part 47: Notes App Highlighter

2024/10/2 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so I've been using the new iOS 18 Notes app highlighter on my iPhone for a bit now, and seriously, it's one of those small updates that makes a HUGE difference in my daily life! Before, I'd often scroll through long notes trying to find that one crucial piece of information I jotted down, but now? It's a breeze! Let me walk you through exactly how I use this feature. It's super intuitive, which is what I love about Apple updates. First, you just open your Notes app and go into any note you want to mark up. Then, tap and hold on the text you want to highlight. You'll see the familiar selection handles appear. Drag these handles to precisely select the words or phrases you wish to emphasize. Once your text is selected, a small pop-up menu appears with several options. This is where the magic happens! Look for the 'Highlight' option – it usually looks like a marker icon. Tap on that, and *voila*! Your text is highlighted, typically in a default yellow color initially. What I really appreciate are the additional color options. It’s not just a single, boring yellow. You can tap the highlight icon again, and a palette of colors will appear. I can choose from a range of vibrant colors, which is perfect for my organizational style. For example, I often use 'Orange' for action items or urgent tasks in my work notes, making them instantly stand out. When I'm planning my meals, I might use 'Mint' for ingredients I've already bought, so I don't accidentally buy them twice. This color-coding system has been a total game-changer for keeping my thoughts straight. It's like having a digital set of highlighters right on my phone for all my lists, ideas, and brainstorms. I even use it when I'm quickly jotting down recipes. I highlight ingredients I need to buy in one color, and steps I've already completed in another. This makes grocery shopping and cooking so much smoother. For students, imagine highlighting key concepts in lecture notes or important definitions – it’s way faster than squinting at tiny text on a PDF. For anyone who uses Notes for reading articles or web clippings, this feature makes it easy to pull out the most important bits for later review. And deleting a highlight is just as easy! If I change my mind or a task is completed, I just select the highlighted text again, tap the 'Highlight' option, and it removes the color. So flexible! This means you can continually refine your notes without making permanent marks. This feature isn't just about making things look pretty; it genuinely boosts my productivity and helps me retain information better. Psychologically, studies show that active recall and marking up text improves memory and comprehension. By highlighting, you're actively engaging with the content, deciding what's important, and creating visual cues for your brain. It’s perfect for anyone who uses their iPhone Notes app for anything from quick reminders to detailed project plans. I honestly can't believe it took this long to get such a basic yet powerful tool, but I'm so glad it’s finally here with iOS 18. If you haven't tried it yet, you absolutely should! It's a small change with a huge impact on how I manage my information daily.
