2 of my kids have recently had to go gluten, dairy, soy, egg free. It’s been a challenge because they are also autistic and have ARFID. Hoping at least my 8yr old will eat this, so he can still have pizza with his classmates on fridays, at school. I will say it does NOT smell the greatest, but anything to keep them from continuing to be sick!

... Read moreAdapting to multiple food allergies in children with autism and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) can be particularly challenging for parents. In my experience, the biggest hurdle has been finding safe and appealing meal options that meet all dietary restrictions while also accommodating sensory sensitivities linked to autism and ARFID. One tip that worked for me was to introduce new foods slowly and involve the children in the selection process to increase their willingness to try them. For example, seeking out allergy-friendly pizza alternatives made from gluten-free crusts and dairy-free cheeses helped my son enjoy pizza Fridays at school, maintaining a sense of normalcy and social inclusion. Another important aspect was managing expectations about taste and smell. Although some allergy-friendly foods may not smell or taste like their traditional counterparts, finding ways to enhance flavor with safe herbs and spices improved acceptance. Additionally, meal prepping and involving the kids in cooking helped reduce anxiety around new foods. To keep my children from feeling isolated or singled out, I worked closely with the school to ensure their dietary needs were understood and accommodated in group settings. This proactive communication helped create a supportive environment. Overall, patience, creativity, and consistent communication with healthcare providers and educators have been key in navigating this complex dietary landscape while supporting my children's health and social well-being.

This was after I cooked them, I ended up adding some seasoning to help with the taste and my EoE 10yr old said was actually edible lol
