Using refrigerated flaky biscuits like Grands not only saves time but also gives a tender, flaky texture that mimics traditional coffee cakes without the fuss of making dough from scratch. One tip I’ve found helpful is to ensure you evenly coat each biscuit piece in the butter before tossing in the sugar and orange zest mixture. This step helps the sugar and zest stick better, offering a burst of citrus flavor in every bite. I like adding chopped pecans for that extra crunch, but walnuts work just as well—or you can skip the nuts for a simpler version. When baking, watch closely toward the end to get a beautifully golden crust without drying out the cake. The warm glaze made from powdered sugar and orange juice is the perfect finishing touch, soaking gently into the cake to create a moist, flavorful finish. Make sure to pour the glaze over the cake while it’s still warm for the best absorption. Personally, this recipe has become a favorite for weekend brunches because it’s quick and yields a moist, flavorful cake without heavy ingredients. You can even customize it by adding a touch of cinnamon or using blood orange zest for a unique flavor profile. It pairs wonderfully with a hot cup of coffee or a creamy latte, making it a truly comforting treat.
