GT Sip & Stroll kind of day 💙
Nevaeh created a fidget she calls The Rattle Shaker—designed to help with the need to keep hands busy. Beads inside the cup give it sound when appropriate, and pipe cleaners allow for quiet fidgeting when it’s not.
She built it using simple materials and confidently presented it with a note card she wrote herself. Thoughtful design, real-world problem solving, and so much growth.
These are the moments. ✨
Creating handmade fidget toys like The Rattle Shaker can be an amazingly effective way to engage children who need sensory input to stay focused. From my experience supporting children with active hands, having a variety of tactile options helps maintain concentration during learning or downtime. The use of beads inside the cup creates a satisfying sound feedback that can promote sensory regulation when an audible stimulus is appropriate, while the pipe cleaner addition allows for silent, discreet fidgeting in settings that require minimal noise. This dual-function design showcases thoughtful problem solving tailored to real-world needs. Encouraging kids to build their own fidget tools nurtures creativity, fine motor skills, and confidence. It also transforms a useful object into a personal project, making the child more likely to use it consistently. Presenting their creation with a note card, like Nevaeh did, further develops communication and presentation skills. Fidget toys can be invaluable for gifted and creative children who might struggle with restlessness due to high mental activity. Having a simple, handmade fidget nearby can serve as a healthy outlet for nervous energy, helping maintain calm and focus without distractions. Incorporating STEM principles by designing and building fidget tools at home or in classrooms can spark curiosity and innovation. Families embracing such approaches often find that moments of play and creation become meaningful learning opportunities, strengthening bonds and fostering thoughtful problem solving that lasts a lifetime. Overall, this story exemplifies how tailored sensory tools paired with creativity and confidence can support thoughtful growth and learning in gifted children and beyond.
