Doom: The Dark Ages

Okay, so I've been obsessing over every little detail from the DOOM: The Dark Ages reveal! As a huge fan, I’m constantly wondering about the characters we'll encounter and, of course, play as. Will we see the classic Doom Slayer, perhaps in an earlier incarnation, or a completely new protagonist embodying the brutal spirit of these DARK AGES? The trailers hint at such a visceral, almost primal combat style, which makes me think we might be seeing the origins of some of the iconic demon-slaying techniques, possibly even the very first Praetor Suit or its ancient equivalent. I’m really hoping for a diverse roster of terrifyingly moody beasty enemies to tear through – the more grotesque and visually impactful, the better! The designs shown so far are just incredible, really leaning into that dark fantasy aesthetic, making each demon feel like a creature ripped straight from a medieval nightmare. I mean, did you see that giant mech-dragon? Absolutely insane! Speaking of dark fantasy, I've seen a lot of chatter comparing it to Diablo 4. While it's certainly not a literal Diablo 4 x Doom Dark Ages crossover, I totally get why people are drawing parallels. Both games dive deep into a grim, demon-filled world, focusing on brutal, satisfying combat against hordes of hellish creatures. The atmosphere in "The Dark Ages" seems to share that heavy, oppressive feeling, but with Doom's signature breakneck speed and aggression. It feels like a perfect blend of medieval dark fantasy and sci-fi carnage, pushing the boundaries of what we expect from the franchise. It’s that shared commitment to a dark, mythic battle against overwhelming evil that makes the comparison resonate. The sheer scale of the battles and the visual fidelity are also on par with modern dark fantasy epics. Then there's the burning question: how does this fit into the broader DOOM games in order of story? Is "The Dark Ages" a prequel that explains the ancient origins of the Slayer or the forces of Hell, perhaps even showing us the first interactions between humanity (or whatever ancient civilization existed) and the demonic realms? Will we finally learn more about the CORE of the universe, the origins of Argent Energy, or the enigmatic ETERNAI and their ancient pacts? I’m genuinely excited to see how id Software weaves this new narrative into the established lore, potentially filling in gaps or introducing new facets to the Doom universe we thought we knew. The idea of exploring the very beginnings of this endless war against evil, seeing the foundational elements of the Doom universe take shape, is incredibly compelling to me as a long-time fan. I've already wishlisted it on Steam! Knowing it's Coming May 14, 2025, and will unlock in approximately 2 months (from an anticipated launch perspective), makes the wait almost unbearable. I'm just picturing myself diving into that medieval carnage, chainsawing through demons with a shield in hand, wielding powerful, ancient weaponry. This game looks like it’s going to redefine what we expect from a Doom title while still delivering that pure, unadulterated demon-slaying fun that we all love. The promise of new mechanics combined with the classic Doom intensity has me absolutely buzzing. I seriously can't wait to explore this dark, primordial chapter!
