The reference vs the art

Diving into my first male portrait was definitely an adventure, and I learned so much, especially about using references and translating them into art! When I was looking for a good male drawing reference, I focused on finding a clear image that showed good lighting and interesting features. For this piece, the digital reference with the curly-haired man in a white tank top was perfect because it offered a great foundation for anatomy and pose. One thing I quickly realized is that a reference isn't a strict blueprint – it's a guide. For instance, my reference subject had earrings, but as I painted, I decided to omit them.
