Many of us have experienced that voice inside our heads telling us to ‘just be realistic.’ It seems like common sense or practical advice, but more often, this voice acts as a barrier that keeps us from fully embracing our potential. From my own journey, I realized that this inner critic often reflects the fears and doubts of others — parents, teachers, peers — whose limited beliefs were never challenged. Over time, these adopted fears became so ingrained that I mistook them as my own. One key realization is that the 'just be realistic' mindset is essentially a form of self-protection rooted in fear of disappointment. For instance, when things start going well—like making progress in the gym, feeling excited about a new relationship, or thriving at work—you might find yourself pulling back subconsciously. That’s because you’re trying to shield yourself from future hurt by not allowing yourself to hope too much. But this pattern ironically prevents you from truly experiencing joy and growth. Breaking free from this cycle involves building a foundation of self-trust. It means learning to embrace uncertainty and believing that no matter what happens, you have the resilience to manage it. When you begin to trust yourself, you don’t need to prepare for disappointment constantly; you allow yourself to lean fully into opportunities for success and happiness. In practical terms, this means actively challenging that internal voice each time it urges you to lower your expectations or hold back. Replace self-limiting thoughts with affirmations of possibility and self-compassion. Surround yourself with supportive voices and consider seeking professional guidance or coaching, which can accelerate your mindset transformation. From my personal experience and those I've supported through coaching, when you release these inherited fears and limiting beliefs, you open the door to living authentically and courageously. It’s not just about ‘being realistic’ — it’s about being real to your potential and dreams. Don’t let the fear of disappointment steal your opportunity to thrive.
