Saying goodbye to the classroom…

Why I’m leaving teaching after 15 years…

Vulnerability

🤍 My Story:

After 15 years of pouring my heart and soul into this profession, I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from teaching. This is not a choice I make lightly, but rather one born out of necessity, reflection, and a deep understanding of how the system has changed—and in many ways, failed.

As a Black educator, I entered the field with a sense of purpose and responsibility. I wanted to be the representation I rarely saw growing up, to inspire my students and show them that their potential is limitless. I wanted to create a classroom where they felt seen, valued, and empowered to excel in a world that often tries to marginalize them. For many years, I was able to do just that. But over time, the realities of the profession have made it increasingly difficult to maintain that passion.

The weight of systemic inequities in education has been crushing. Schools in underserved communities, where I’ve dedicated my career, are often the most underfunded and under-resourced. Yet, the expectations placed on educators in these environments are disproportionately high. The emotional labor required to support my students academically, socially, and emotionally—while also trying to navigate biases and systemic racism—has been overwhelming.

The politics of education have also become unbearable. Teaching is no longer just about fostering curiosity and helping students grow; it’s now about test scores, metrics, and compliance. Decisions are often made by people far removed from the classroom, with little regard for the voices of those who work directly with students. Policies that claim to promote equity often end up creating more barriers, especially for students of color.

And then there’s the lack of support and respect for educators themselves. Despite being on the front lines, teachers are often undervalued, underpaid, and overworked. It’s exhausting to constantly advocate for both my students and myself in a system that seems determined to push us both down.

Leaving teaching feels like leaving a piece of myself behind. But I know that I can continue to advocate for my community and inspire young minds in other ways. I’m stepping away, not because I’ve lost faith in my students, but because I’ve lost faith in a system that refuses to prioritize them.

To my fellow educators: keep fighting. To my students: you are my why and always will be. And to those in power: it’s time to truly listen to the voices of those who know the classroom best.

This isn’t goodbye to education it’s a step toward finding new ways to serve, uplift, and make a difference.

... Read moreLeaving a teaching career is a profound emotional journey for many educators. After years of building lasting connections and nurturing students, the challenges within the education system can become overwhelming. Educators often share a sense of community with their colleagues, forming bonds that stand strong despite external pressures. As funding disparities lead to systemic inequities, teachers in underserved communities frequently find themselves struggling to provide the necessary support their students deserve. Policymaking and administrative decisions that prioritize metrics over the educational needs of students contribute to frustration among teachers. Many educators feel disconnected from the core mission of fostering growth and curiosity in their students. This feeling of disconnection is compounded by societal challenges, including biases that persist within the educational system. Through the lens of experience, this transition away from teaching doesn't signify the end of an educator's impact. Many former teachers find new ways to advocate for equity and uplift marginalized voices in their communities. It's crucial for educators to harness their experiences into broader advocacy efforts, ensuring that future generations receive support that cultivates their potential. As tensions within education continue to evolve, the importance of highlighting and addressing these challenges remains paramount, ensuring that future leaders contribute meaningfully to the discourse around educational reform.

Last night I had to put my 6 year old guinea pig Brindle to rest. He had a tumor that was too big to save him. I do not have words to describe how wonderful he was. There are no words that can express how kind he was. He was not a normal Guinea pig at all, I’ve had three others and no one comes clo
