First week of school: Classroom Rules Game

Setting your expectations in the first week of school with set you up for the entire year!

My first year teaching, I started in January and took over for a teacher who was ready to quit.

The biggest mistake I made was implementing her same teaching style & routines. Not saying they were bad, they just didn’t WORK. 🥴

It’s important for you to teach, model & practice your rules and expectations. If they don’t do it right, do it again and again until they DO!

I stick with 3 simple rules in first grade:

1. Be respectful

2. Be responsible

3. Be safe

When you’re talking to elementary students, you can’t just tell them, you’ll have to show them.

I created this game to teach your students the rules and allow them to discuss and decide on a better way to handle real scenarios!

... Read moreIn my experience, the first week of school is crucial for laying a strong foundation for classroom management and student behavior throughout the year. Using a game-based approach to teach rules not only engages young learners but also helps them internalize the expectations by actively participating in discussions around real scenarios. One effective method I found is to incorporate questions like "What would happen if...?" to prompt students to think critically about the consequences of their actions. For example, asking "What would happen if we screamed or broke things when upset?" helps children understand the impact of their behavior on themselves and others. This interactive approach fosters perspective taking and emotional regulation, which are essential social-emotional skills. It is also important to revisit these scenarios and agreements regularly to reinforce the expectations and remind students of the classroom culture they helped create. A collaborative class anchor chart, made during the game, serves as a visual reminder and promotes ownership of classroom rules. Furthermore, involving families by sending home a version of the game helps extend the learning environment beyond the classroom, encouraging caregivers to support these behavioral agreements at home. For teachers managing transition periods or substitutes, this no-prep, editable game makes behavior resets and review sessions efficient and meaningful. As a result, students feel more respected and responsible because they have actively contributed to setting the standards, rather than just being told what to do. Overall, this classroom rules game enhances classroom management by blending fun, discussion, and real-life problem solving, creating a respectful, responsible, and safe learning environment right from day one.
