Stop Typing Your Expenses

Your iPhone can see your spending in real time.

But you’re still manually typing into Excel like it’s 1998.

Every tap-to-pay logs itself. Every receipt photo gets categorized.

Combine it in Numbers → add a donut chart → done.

Now your budget explains itself without you begging.

Build the system once. Watch your money talk.

2/16 Edited to

... Read moreManaging personal finances can often feel tedious, especially when manual data entry into spreadsheets dominates the process. However, with modern iPhones and native Apple apps, automating your expense tracking is not only possible but also easy to set up. From my experience, the key is to build an integrated automation system using apps you already have: Wallet, Shortcuts, and Numbers. Every tap-to-pay transaction in Wallet is recorded by default on your device, but it takes a bit of configuration to turn that raw data into meaningful insights without extra work. I recommend starting by creating a dedicated expense tracker in Numbers. This spreadsheet serves as the central repository for your financial data. Then, use Shortcuts to automate extraction and categorization of transactions. For example, when you tap your card, Shortcuts can capture details like merchant, amount, date, and automatically assign a category such as Food & Beverage or Transportation. You can also enable receipt photo recognition via Shortcuts to log physical purchases. The beauty of this system is privacy and simplicity — all processing happens locally on your iPhone, so your financial data stays secure. Additionally, since you use the Apple ecosystem efficiently, there’s no need to pay for subscription-based budgeting apps. Once the data flows into Numbers, it’s straightforward to generate visual summaries such as donut charts or monthly totals. This lets your budget explain itself with clear trends and breakdowns without manual typing or begging your finances to reveal their secrets. I encourage anyone tired of tedious expense logging to build this system once. Over time, you’ll watch your money talk to you automatically, helping you make smarter spending decisions easily and privately.
