One of the biggest reasons this happens is that Clonezilla, by default, often checks the total size of your source disk, not just the *used space*. So, even if you only have 200GB of data on a 1TB drive, trying to clone it to a 500GB SSD can fail if you don't prepare properly. This is where manually shrinking partitions on your source disk becomes absolutely crucial before you even touch Clonezilla. I learned the hard way that you need to get your largest partition down to a size that will comfortably fit on the smaller target disk, leaving some breathing room. Make sure your file systems are healthy and defragmented too; sometimes fragmentation can make shrinking harder.
My process usually involves a good cleanup first: uninstalling old programs, deleting temporary files, and moving large personal files to external storage. Then, I head into Windows Disk Management. After your clone is complete, whether with Clonezilla or AOMEI, don't forget these crucial steps: first, test booting from your new SSD. Sometimes, the boot order in BIOS/UEFI needs to be adjusted. Second, once you're in Windows, go back to Disk Management. If AOMEI automatically shrunk partitions, you might have unallocated space on your new SSD. You can then extend your main partition to use that space, maximizing your new drive's capacity. It's a bit of a journey, but seeing your system fly on a new SSD is incredibly rewarding!
