Starting our homestead.

Starting my family homestead for my sweet family of 4. We are going BIG this year with veggies and fruits and it’s all trial and error. Turning my back unused deck into the garden of my dreams. Heavy stuff like potatoes and tomatoes will be on the ground. Big goal is lots of canning. We already have tomatoes, onion, bell peppers and jalapeños growing indoors, just waiting on the last frost to transfer outside! The list is endless. Next… chickens!

From personal experience, turning an unused space like a back deck into a flourishing garden can dramatically change how you connect with nature and food. Starting plants indoors, such as tomatoes, jalapeños, and sweet bell peppers, helps extend the growing season and gives young plants a strong start before transplanting them outside after the last frost. Heavy vegetables like potatoes and tomatoes thrive best when planted directly in the ground, where roots can spread and access essential nutrients. Planning for a big harvest means anticipating storage and preservation methods—canning is an excellent way to enjoy your garden's bounty year-round. It takes some trial and error to perfect, but the effort is rewarding as it reduces food waste and supports self-sufficiency. Adding chickens to your homestead introduces fresh eggs and natural pest control, plus they contribute to the composting cycle with their manure. Raising chickens also teaches valuable lessons about animal care and responsibility to the entire family. Don’t underestimate the importance of planning and scheduling, especially if you’re balancing homesteading with homeschooling or stay-at-home parenting. Each season will bring new challenges and opportunities to learn. For those looking to replicate a similar experience, starting small and progressively expanding your garden and livestock can help manage workload and prevent getting overwhelmed. Overall, creating a homestead from scratch is a deeply fulfilling adventure that nurtures growth—for your family, your food, and your connection to the land. Keep experimenting, learning, and enjoying every step of your homesteading journey.
