Welp! “brushing your teeth causes gum disease” has been a popular comment on my YouTube videos lately… 🤦♀️
Please know that toothbrushing isn’t damaging your gums! It is preventing your gums from being damaged. Can you use a toothbrush wrong? Sure! But the current narrative that “all toothbrushes cause gum disease” and “we need to stop brushing and just swish with mouthwash” is problematic! Swishing with mouthwash isn’t going to remove plaque from your teeth You need to manually remove it with a toothbrush.
Ask your dental hygienist at your next appointment! They will tell you if you’re brushing wrong since they know your individual mouth best!
From my own experience, I've noticed many people hesitate to brush their teeth vigorously because they fear causing gum damage. However, what often happens is the opposite—insufficient brushing leads to plaque buildup, which triggers inflammation known as gingivitis, characterized by swollen, red, and bleeding gums. This inflammation is actually your body's immune response to harmful plaque bacteria. The key thing I've learned is that the toothbrush itself isn't the problem—it's how you use it. Using a soft-bristled brush gently along the gumline removes the sticky plaque responsible for gum disease. Ignoring brushing or relying solely on mouthwash won’t address this plaque; mouthwash can freshen breath and reduce some bacteria but cannot physically remove plaque deposits. I remember when I first learned about the formation of hardened plaque, or tartar, along my gum line. Once tartar forms, it’s very difficult to remove without a professional cleaning, and it leads to advanced gum disease that can damage gums and even result in tooth loss. Visiting a dental hygienist regularly has been crucial for me. They can assess your brushing technique and correct any errors to ensure you maintain healthy gums. They also provide personalized tips, such as the right angle to hold your toothbrush and how long to brush each section. Overall, brushing your teeth the right way is a powerful preventive measure against gum disease. Combining proper brushing with regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings keeps gums healthy and prevents the harmful immune response that leads to gingivitis and beyond.
