From my own experience and countless conversations with friends who have faced painful breakups, I've come to realize that what we often call heartbreak is more complex than just missing someone. It’s not always love, but sometimes a form of addiction to the feelings and the person themselves. This addiction manifests as obsessive thoughts, withdrawal symptoms, and a struggle to let go, much like any substance addiction. When you break up with someone and you find yourself repeatedly reaching out or unable to stop thinking about them, it’s important to understand those feelings are your brain reacting to loss and change. It floods your memory with good moments, creating a fantasy that overshadows the reality of the unhealthy or painful parts of the relationship. This selective memory can trap you in a cycle of longing and emotional turmoil. What helped me was consciously acknowledging the truth about the relationship out loud: the disrespect, the neglect, how it made me feel when they left. Saying these things aloud helped break the mental spell. It was a detox process—a way to rewiring my mindset. Understanding that true love is not controlling or restrictive helped me redefine my boundaries. Real love should give you freedom, not place your heart in chains. If you feel like you're on an emotional leash, it might be time to reassess the relationship or your feelings. If you’re struggling, remember it’s okay to seek support—from friends, therapists, or support groups. Day by day, you can reclaim your peace and find healthier attachments based on respect and genuine care, rather than addiction. Heartbreak is tough, but healing is possible, and love should ultimately lift you up, not hold you down.
