Awesome! I’ve allowed both me and my son to fall into the endless addiction of doom scrolling. His is primarily on YouTube shorts in the evenings before bedtime. We are currently not allowing ourselves to watch shorts and we have no apps on our phones that focus on short form content. I still have Lemon8 but I read a lot on here plus I find motivation here, so I allow myself to keep this app for now. My son thought he found a workaround by letting the YouTube thumbnail previews play but I told him that’s not allowed for every single video, because that’s what he was doing. I told him that when nothing is sparking his interest, it’s time to turn the tv off or find a movie/tv series to watch. I personally don’t watch much tv but instead would doom scroll on Facebook reels. If I find myself playing around on my phone for too long (short breaks are allowed), then I put it down, turn on some music/podcast/audiobook, and go find something to clean. The music really helps because it calms the urge to go sit and doom scroll. Currently my distraction task is decluttering my son’s bedroom before he’s out of school for summer break. Then I have my office lined up for a good decluttering and dusting once I’m done with his room. The doom scrolling not only killed my already short attention span but I also found myself more and more depressed. Not that the content was depressing but I guess just the way it was altering my mind and how it consumed so much time that I was pushing other tasks to the side for days, weeks, even months. Bills were being left unpaid, dirty dishes and laundry piled up, I missed the open enrollment period for my job’s medical benefits, always rushing and late to everything because I didn’t prep/plan ahead, etc. It was really getting out of control. Today, I woke up to a clean kitchen and living room and it was a lovely feeling to not have those daunting tasks weighing me down first thing in the morning. I felt lighter today and more energized. Yay! 😁
