Substacks I read this week

2025/4/29 Edited to

... Read moreThe digital world often feels like a never-ending stream of information, pushing us towards constant urgency and leaving us feeling overwhelmed or stuck in a cycle of doomscrolling. I know I've been there, feeling my attention span shrinking and my stress levels rising. That's why I've found such immense value in turning to Substack, especially for thoughtful essays that help me manage stress and find a bit more calm in my day. One of the biggest benefits I've discovered is how long-form content, particularly well-written essays, helps in "saving your attention span." Unlike endless short videos or quick social media posts, diving into an essay requires and rewards sustained focus. It’s like a mental workout that strengthens your ability to concentrate, pulling you away from the fragmented consumption that often leaves us feeling more scattered than informed. I've noticed a significant shift in my ability to concentrate on other tasks after regularly engaging with these longer pieces. These essays also encourage a much-needed sense of "slowness possible in the digital age?" In a world that constantly demands our immediate attention, choosing to read something substantial is an act of defiance against urgency. It allows for reflection, for truly processing ideas, rather than just skimming headlines. This deliberate pace, this act of "choosing instead of urgency," is incredibly therapeutic. It helps quiet the noise in my head and provides a mental space for deeper thought, which is crucial for stress management. I find myself noticing more subtle details, both in the writing and in my own environment, when I'm not rushing through content. Many of the Substack essays I enjoy delve into topics that directly contribute to a more mindful existence. They often explore personal growth, philosophical questions, or offer unique perspectives on navigating modern life. These aren't just articles; they are reflections that help you step back from "the end of our extremely online era." They foster "deep conversations" within yourself, prompting you to consider different viewpoints and re-evaluate your own habits. This kind of introspective engagement is incredibly powerful for reducing anxiety and gaining a clearer sense of purpose. If you're looking to integrate this into your own wellness routine, I'd suggest dedicating a specific time each day or week to reading one or two essays. It could be during your morning coffee, a quiet lunch break, or instead of mindlessly scrolling before bed. Think of it as a small, intentional investment in your mental well-being. By curating your Substack subscriptions to voices that inspire thoughtfulness and calm, you're building a personalized sanctuary of content that actively combats digital overload and helps you cultivate a more peaceful, focused mind. It's a simple, yet effective way to reclaim control and truly manage the daily stresses of life.

Awesome! I’ve allowed both me and my son to fall into the endless addiction of doom scrolling. His is primarily on YouTube shorts in the evenings before bedtime. We are currently not allowing ourselves to watch shorts and we have no apps on our phones that focus on short form content. I still have Lemon8 but I read a lot on here plus I find motivation here, so I allow myself to keep this app for now. My son thought he found a workaround by letting the YouTube thumbnail previews play but I told him that’s not allowed for every single video, because that’s what he was doing. I told him that when nothing is sparking his interest, it’s time to turn the tv off or find a movie/tv series to watch. I personally don’t watch much tv but instead would doom scroll on Facebook reels. If I find myself playing around on my phone for too long (short breaks are allowed), then I put it down, turn on some music/podcast/audiobook, and go find something to clean. The music really helps because it calms the urge to go sit and doom scroll. Currently my distraction task is decluttering my son’s bedroom before he’s out of school for summer break. Then I have my office lined up for a good decluttering and dusting once I’m done with his room. The doom scrolling not only killed my already short attention span but I also found myself more and more depressed. Not that the content was depressing but I guess just the way it was altering my mind and how it consumed so much time that I was pushing other tasks to the side for days, weeks, even months. Bills were being left unpaid, dirty dishes and laundry piled up, I missed the open enrollment period for my job’s medical benefits, always rushing and late to everything because I didn’t prep/plan ahead, etc. It was really getting out of control. Today, I woke up to a clean kitchen and living room and it was a lovely feeling to not have those daunting tasks weighing me down first thing in the morning. I felt lighter today and more energized. Yay! 😁
