In Canada, SARS-CoV-2 was detected on multiple surfaces including floors, medical equipment, and in the air, even among mothers who tested negative or were asymptomatic. This underscores the challenge of completely eliminating viral presence and highlights the critical need for continuous vigilance in infection prevention. Research from Iran further reveals high concentrations of airborne bacteria and fungi in delivery rooms, with organisms like Staphylococcus, Micrococcus, and molds such as Aspergillus identified. These pathogens pose substantial infection risks to both newborns and mothers, especially when immune defenses are lowered during and after childbirth. Another vital concern addressed by ongoing investigations is the adherence to infection control protocols by hospital staff. Observed lapses in hand hygiene, inconsistent glove usage, and inadequate cleaning routines significantly increase the chances of hospital-acquired infections. Moreover, surfaces frequently touched by staff and patients, including bed rails and door handles, have been found contaminated with drug-resistant bacteria like MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and VRE (Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci). These pathogens are difficult to treat and contribute to serious complications in vulnerable populations. Given these findings, it is essential for healthcare facilities to enhance environmental cleaning and disinfection practices, invest in staff training on infection control, and implement routine environmental surveillance to identify and mitigate contamination hotspots. Pregnant women and families should be informed about these potential risks to make educated decisions regarding their birthing environment.
