Living as an expat in a foreign country like the United States comes with unique challenges, especially when it involves adjusting to a drastically different climate. From my experience as a mother of four, originally from Thailand, the survival story of even the smallest family members—like our backyard chickens—becoming a little symbol of resilience is quite inspiring. The cold here is no joke. Temperatures that dip below freezing can be shocking after living in tropical Thailand. One day, I remember looking out and wondering whether the chickens would survive the frigid night. Surprisingly, they did, which taught me a lot about adapting and thriving despite tough circumstances. Being a Thai wife married to an American and raising four kids in this setting means juggling cultural differences, parenting styles, and sometimes, the harsh realities of winter. Everyday simple acts, like ensuring our chickens are protected, reflect bigger lessons about care, persistence, and managing life far from home. For other Thai moms or anyone adjusting to a new country, I’d say embracing local customs while keeping your roots intact is key. For example, learning how Americans prepare for winter—from sealing windows to layering clothes—helped our family stay warm and healthy. At the same time, sharing Thai traditions at home keeps our cultural identity alive and offers comfort amid the cold. So when I see our resilient chickens weathering the cold, it’s a reminder: no matter how tough things get, with the right preparation and mindset, survival and even flourishing in a new environment is possible and rewarding.
