Potty Trained at 20 Months
I potty trained my son at 19 months and by 20 months he was a pro!
To start off you need A LOT OF PATIENCE!
You gotta understand mistakes will happen and getting upset will prolong the process. Understand this is all new to them and they’re just learning.
How do we learn? By making mistakes sometimes. So it’s okay for them to potty on themselves!
What you’ll need
1. Potty Seat
2. Underwater (NO PULL UPS)
3. A Lot of disinfecting products/ carpet cleaner
You’re going to want to buy a potty seat months in advance.
*Months in Advance!*
Let them explore the seat by playing with it, putting their toys in it, and moving it around the house. You want to the potty seat in the room you hang out the most, so they see it every day.
When you see them sitting on their potty then that’s your go to! Cancel all your plans for the first week.
We went immediately to Underwear. No pulls ups! No underwear with paddings in them. Just Underwear!
Yes, they’re going to pee through them or poop in them, BUT they need to see and understand, “hey why did that just go through these?” 😅 “what is that?” “Why am I wet?”
When they pee or poop themselves, because it will happen especially the first 3 days, say, “Oops, you gotta go potty.” Sit them down on the potty and say we potty here.
Then offer the potty to them as often as possible for the first 3 days. If they Drink water/juice 5 minutes later sit them on the potty.
I think the first day we offer the potty every 5 to 10 minutes.
Day Two we offered it every 10-20 minutes.
Day Three we started to get formal with the potty signs like the Pee Dance and Poop face.
When those signs come you gotta be fast and offer the potty 🚽 don’t scary them off be calm, “Oh do you have to potty? Let’s go try!”
Bed time… oh, that one was fun! NO Diapers, No Pull Ups!
We did towels on the bed. You can get pee pads for the bed to save your mattress if you don’t have a bed protector.
When they pee themselves and they will, just say “oops that’s okay we just gotta go potty” 🚽 take them to the potty again. Move the seat to the bed room at night. Sit them there. Clean up the towel or pads, clean baby, and change underwear.
Offer the potty at night too. Wake up and wake them and offer. Definitely offer the potty before bedtime and in the morning.
Lots and lots of patiences and understanding.!
Week two try to get out of the house if you feel you can handle it.
I put the potty seat in the car with bags, wipes, and change of clothes. ( I still travel with the potty seat)
Before we leave the house I have him go potty! When we get to our location I sat him on the potty, before we left the location I sat him on the potty, and when we got home I offer the potty.
Offer, offer, offer!!!
Week 3 you’re going to know all the signs, your baby will love to go potty 🚽 you’re going to be so proud of them!
Mistakes will happen because life happens, but it gets easier!

My son is 2 & has the concept. Pull his pull up, go on potty. He doesn’t do it. Do his thang. Pull his pull up and that’s it lol😂. He rather stand up and do his business. So I’ll have to get the stand up potty maybe.
