Checklist for Childproofing before Crawling

Doors

• Use door holders and doorstops to keep them from closing on your baby's fingers.

Furniture

•Secure heavy furniture, such as bookcases and chests of drawers, to the walls.

• Bolt heavy paintings, flat-screen televisions, and large mirrors to the wall.

• Put soft guards on corners and edges of low tables.

Poison proofing

• Keep all toxic items, such as cleaning supplies, vitamins, medicine, hand sanitizer and toiletries in latched cabinets.

• Remove poisonous houseplants, such as Philodendron.

• Keep your purse out of reach.

• Program the number for the American Association of Poison Control hotline, (800) 222-1222, in your cell phone.

Controlling access

• Use safety gates, door locks, knob covers and latches on cabinets and drawers.

• Have trash cans with child-proof covers.

• Secure refrigerator with an appliance latch.

• Put plastic guards on CD and DVD players.

• Remove tablecloths and place mats. (Your baby can pull them down, along with whatever's on them.)

• Distract your baby by having unlocked cupboards filled with fun, baby-safe items, such as plastic bowls and containers in the kitchen.

Fire and carbon monoxide

• Test smoke detectors monthly.

• Test your carbon monoxide detector every six months.

• Plan fire escape routes for all family members.

Use a fireplace screen, and remove gas fireplace key.

• Keep matches, lighters and fireplace tools out of reach.

Pools and water

• Don't leave babies unattended even for a moment in or near a pool or other water. Do not answer or talk on the phone while your baby is in water.

• Install gated fences that are at least four feet high around pools.

• Empty wading pools after each use.

• Don't leave even small amounts of water or cleaning supplies in buckets or other containers.

• Install a latch on toilet seat.

Sun

• Keep your baby out of the sun as much as possible.

• When your baby is outside, protect her skin with hats and light-colored clothing with long sleeves.

• Use a gentle sunscreen with at least 15 SPF.

... Read moreOkay, mamas and papas, so you've got your house perfectly childproofed with that amazing checklist (you're doing great!). But what about getting your little explorer ready for their big crawling adventure? As someone who’s been through it, I know how exciting—and a little nerve-wracking—it is when you see those first signs of movement! Learning to crawl isn't just about getting from A to B; it's a huge developmental milestone that builds strength, coordination, and even problem-solving skills. So, here are some of my favorite ways to encourage those crucial 'pre-crawling exercises' and help your baby build the muscles they need to get going! First up, tummy time, tummy time, tummy time! You've probably heard it a million times, but it's truly the foundation for crawling. When your baby is on their tummy, they’re strengthening their neck, back, and shoulder muscles – all essential for pushing up and moving forward. Start early, even for a few minutes at a time, several times a day. Lie down with them, make silly faces, or place engaging toys just out of reach to encourage them to lift their head and reach. I used to put a small, safe mirror in front of my baby during tummy time, and they loved seeing their own reflection! Remember, every little bit counts, and it doesn't have to be a battle. Next, encourage rolling. Before crawling, babies usually master rolling from back to front and vice versa. This builds core strength and body awareness. You can gently assist them by guiding their hips or placing a toy to one side to encourage a roll. Once they can roll confidently, they're developing the rotational strength needed for more complex movements. As they get a bit stronger, look for signs of them pushing up on their hands and knees. This 'rocking' motion is a classic pre-crawling exercise. To encourage this, place toys slightly out of reach while they are on their tummy, so they have to push up to see or grab them. You can also get down on the floor with them and gently place your hands under their feet or hips to give them a little push, like they're starting a mini crawl. My little one loved when I'd put a favorite soft toy a few inches away, just far enough to make them strain and rock. Creating the right environment is also key. Make sure they have plenty of floor time outside of baby containers like bouncers or swings. A large, clean play mat in a secure area (hello, childproofing checklist!) provides the perfect space for exploration. I always made sure to have a variety of textures and safe objects for them to touch and interact with, stimulating their senses as they moved. Remember, the goal isn't to force crawling, but to provide opportunities and support for them to develop at their own pace. If you're ever worried about your baby's development or feel they're not hitting milestones, don't hesitate to chat with your pediatrician. Every baby is unique, and they'll get there in their own time! But by providing these early 'pre-crawling exercises' and a safe, stimulating environment, you're giving them the best possible start on their journey to mobility.
