🫶When Compassion Changes Everything🫶

This isn’t something I learned.

It’s a reminder — because it’s so easy to forget.

Easy to forget when we’re tired.

When we’re overwhelmed.

When we walk into a room already carrying stories we were told before we ever met the person.

I was warned.

“Be careful.”

“He’s difficult.”

“He’s violent.”

And yes — safety always comes first. That will never change.

But this patient was also end of life.

Emaciated.

Failing to thrive.

Very, very sick.

And pain doesn’t always show up quietly.

It doesn’t always look gentle.

Sometimes pain looks like anger.

So I paused.

I reminded myself to walk in without labels.

To soften my voice.

To lead with empathy instead of expectation.

I smiled.

I spoke to him like a human being, not a problem to manage.

I told him we were going to have a good day.

And we did.

The sitter was kind.

Present.

Patient.

Together, we created a space where he felt seen — not judged, not dismissed.

By the end of the day, he hugged me.

And in that moment, I could see the peace on his face.

The peace of knowing he wasn’t alone in his pain.

This isn’t about ignoring safety.

It’s about remembering humanity.

It’s a reminder to pause.

To see the person before the behavior.

To ask ourselves: What would I feel if I were in that bed?

Because sometimes we’re not called to fix.

Sometimes we’re called to witness, to hold space, to love.

And sometimes —

compassion changes everything. 🤍

If this resonated with you, you’re not alone 🤍
