Trying out dry brushing
Hello zesties! Now would be a perfect time for me to work on another kit as it's my last school holiday before I become a working adult. However I chose not to buy one as I want to save up money for a larger kit like an MG. So in the mean time I've been looking into tools, specifically paints. I've been wanting to try dry brushing, but there aren't too many guides online for gunpla specifically. So since i kinda had all the stuff needed, I decided to experiment with it myself. So here's my experience.
In gunpla, dry brushing is often used to make grey parts like weapons and inner frames look more metallic. Unlike just slathering paint onto the piece, its meant to give it a more worn, metallic look
TOOLS USED
-junk parts from previous gunpla, specifically in grey. SInce I was drybrushing with greyish tones, I didn't want to have a base colour that was too different.
-Dspiae soft tip paint markers (silver, gunmetal). These aren't the type that can pump out ink. This experiment was to test if I needed to buy them
-paint brush
-painting sticks
-paper
STEPS
1. coat the brush with ink. In my case, I just painted over the brush
2. rub off the excess on the paper. Stop when the brush can no longer leave clear patches
3. brush onto the part. No need to keep running over with multiple coats. Just make sure there are no large patches not covered. The point is not to paint the whole surface
RESULTS
I started with gunmetal and silver. Probably because silver was much lighter than the grey I was experimenting on, but it stood out a lot more than I was initially anticipating. However on closer inspection, it actually looks quite cool. I could probably use it for something in the future. For gunmetal, the look was understandably more subtle, but it can be noticed upon closer inspection especially under light. I had only 1 big piece left to use, so I went with gunmetal. Results in picture.
I was quite pleasantly surprised that it worked this well, and I'm happy that means I don't need to buy new markers or paint. However now that it's all done I'm starting to look at my previous kits and wondering if I could have done something like that for their inner frames... I guess from now on it will be a must
