Trying out dry brushing

Hello zesties! Now would be a perfect time for me to work on another kit as it's my last school holiday before I become a working adult. However I chose not to buy one as I want to save up money for a larger kit like an MG. So in the mean time I've been looking into tools, specifically paints. I've been wanting to try dry brushing, but there aren't too many guides online for gunpla specifically. So since i kinda had all the stuff needed, I decided to experiment with it myself. So here's my experience.

In gunpla, dry brushing is often used to make grey parts like weapons and inner frames look more metallic. Unlike just slathering paint onto the piece, its meant to give it a more worn, metallic look

TOOLS USED

-junk parts from previous gunpla, specifically in grey. SInce I was drybrushing with greyish tones, I didn't want to have a base colour that was too different.

-Dspiae soft tip paint markers (silver, gunmetal). These aren't the type that can pump out ink. This experiment was to test if I needed to buy them

-paint brush

-painting sticks

-paper

STEPS

1. coat the brush with ink. In my case, I just painted over the brush

2. rub off the excess on the paper. Stop when the brush can no longer leave clear patches

3. brush onto the part. No need to keep running over with multiple coats. Just make sure there are no large patches not covered. The point is not to paint the whole surface

RESULTS

I started with gunmetal and silver. Probably because silver was much lighter than the grey I was experimenting on, but it stood out a lot more than I was initially anticipating. However on closer inspection, it actually looks quite cool. I could probably use it for something in the future. For gunmetal, the look was understandably more subtle, but it can be noticed upon closer inspection especially under light. I had only 1 big piece left to use, so I went with gunmetal. Results in picture.

I was quite pleasantly surprised that it worked this well, and I'm happy that means I don't need to buy new markers or paint. However now that it's all done I'm starting to look at my previous kits and wondering if I could have done something like that for their inner frames... I guess from now on it will be a must

... Read moreDry brushing is a popular technique among Gunpla enthusiasts aiming to achieve authentic and weathered metallic finishes on their model kits. The process involves using a nearly dry brush loaded with a minimal amount of paint—like silver or gunmetal—to lightly sweep over raised surfaces, creating highlights that simulate natural wear and give parts a convincing metallic sheen. This method contrasts with traditional painting that applies uniform layers; dry brushing emphasizes texture and depth, enhancing visual interest without obscuring detail. In practice, selecting the right tools is crucial. Using junk grey parts as test subjects, as done here, helps maintain base color consistency for the dry brushing tones. The choice of soft tip paint markers (silver and gunmetal) combined with a fine paintbrush allows for controlled application without excessive paint transfer. Gently rubbing off excess ink on paper before painting prevents clumping and ensures dry brushing's signature light touch. The experiment's results demonstrate that silver creates more noticeable contrast due to its lighter shade, adding bright metallic highlights that catch the eye instantly. Meanwhile, gunmetal produces a more subtle but realistic effect, perfect for inner frames and parts expected to have a naturally darker metal look. Such subtlety is especially appreciated under good lighting conditions, enhancing the kit’s depth without overwhelming its original colors. For Gunpla builders aiming to replicate a used or battle-worn appearance, dry brushing is an invaluable technique that requires minimal investment and effort. It revitalizes older kits by giving inner frames and weapons a refreshed metallic finish that stands out in display. Future projects can benefit significantly from incorporating dry brushing as a standard step, especially when higher-detail Master Grade (MG) kits or other large-scale models are planned. Moreover, dry brushing complements other weathering effects, such as washes or panel lining, providing a layered, professional finish that hobbyists often seek. Beginners are encouraged to experiment with different brush sizes, paint types, and base colors to master dry brushing nuances. Watching tutorials and community examples can also provide inspiration and best practices, but self-experimentation like this is equally valuable for personal technique development. In summary, dry brushing transforms Gunpla models by simulating realistic metallic wear that enhances part textures and visual appeal. Embracing this technique expands your modeling skill set and improves kit aesthetics, making it an essential addition to any Gunpla enthusiast’s toolkit.
