Celebrating Hanamatsuri: The Birth of the Buddha
Today, we honor Hanamatsuri (花まつり), Japan’s vibrant celebration of Buddha’s birthday, observed each year on April 8th. This beautiful festival, rich in color and symbolism, traces its roots back to the story of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who was born in the Lumbini Garden in present-day Nepal around 563 BCE. He would later become the Buddha, the “Awakened One,” whose teachings have touched hearts and lives for millennia.
A Garden of Flowers and Sweet Tea Rituals
Temples across Japan transform into blossoming sanctuaries with flower-adorned altars called Hanamido, representing the lush garden of the Buddha's birth. A key tradition is the pouring of sweet hydrangea tea (amacha) over a small statue of the infant Buddha—a symbolic reenactment of the heavenly rain said to have bathed him at birth.
