While the game's narrative is absolutely brilliant, with its intricate political schemes, class struggles, and religious corruption, imagine actually living through the Lion War! The constant threat of betrayal, widespread poverty, and magic-infused battles make for a truly unstable and terrifying existence. You'd never know who to trust, from your neighbors to the highest lords, and survival would be a daily struggle against both monstrous beasts and corrupt power structures. It's a tactical masterpiece, but a truly dreadful place to call home. Then there's an interesting one like Mystic Quest, sometimes known for being a more accessible entry into the RPG genre. Despite its lighter tone, the world itself is constantly under threat. The idea of your entire world's balance being tied to elemental crystals that are always being corrupted or stolen? That's a lot of pressure! It feels like you're always one step away from ecological disaster, with entire regions plagued by earthquakes, droughts, or floods, and who wants that kind of constant existential stress? Even looking at other classic Final Fantasy realms, like the vibrant but war-torn world of Final Fantasy IX with its ongoing conflicts between nations and the looming threat of the Black Mages, or the politically charged and conspiratorial Ivalice in Final Fantasy XII, you quickly realize these captivating settings are often built on foundations of strife. And let's not forget games like Secret of Evermore, another gem from the SNES era, which throws you into harsh, monster-filled landscapes across different historical periods. Survival in Evermore means constant scavenging and fighting off dangerous creatures, which sounds exhausting! It's wild how these games immerse us so completely, but when you really stop to think about the day-to-day realities for their inhabitants, many of these 'heroic' worlds are actually pretty bleak and dangerous. It makes you appreciate the relative comfort of our own world, despite its flaws!
