D&D Character Art Progress

Hey fellow artists! Seeing how much interest there is in D&D character art, I wanted to share a few more thoughts on my process, especially when tackling a character like Lottie. When I started sketching Lottie, my Afro-Caribbean human pirate D&D character, my first step was really diving into her backstory. Thinking about her life as a former pirate, escaping the American Navy, and now living by her wits – it all influences her look. For instance, her green bandana and brown jacket aren't just random clothes; they tell a story of practicality and her past. This is how lore truly enhances digital art character design – it gives every detail meaning and helps you move beyond just drawing a pretty face to creating a rich, believable character. To achieve that realistic character art style, references are your best friend. I even used a 3D model of Charlotte 'Lottie' Deveaux as a base reference, which was incredibly helpful for getting the proportions and perspective right before moving to the sketch phase. Don't be afraid to gather tons of inspiration for clothing, expressions, and even specific features. For Lottie's dreadlocks with gold beads, which I mentioned I'd never drawn before, I spent a good amount of time looking at different dreadlock styles and how light interacts with them to make them look authentic. It’s all about breaking down complex shapes into simpler forms and understanding their volume from various angles. I truly believe that taking the time to study real-world textures and forms is key to elevating character illustrations with distinctive colors and textures, making them feel more grounded and alive. Consider how light hits different materials – the soft folds of fabric versus the gleam of metal or the unique texture of hair. Another tip for realistic digital painting is to layer your colors and values. I start with simple flats, just like you saw in my progress shots, and then gradually build up shadows and highlights. Experiment with different blending modes and brushes for skin, fabric, and hair; each material will react differently to light. For the dreads, for example, I focused on rendering individual strands and clusters, adding those gold beads as small, reflective accents to catch the eye. It's a meticulous process, but seeing Lottie come to life, from her determined green eyes to the worn texture of her jacket, makes all those hours worth it.
