Mystery Train to Memphis
On July 3rd 1956, Elvis boarded The Tennessean, a diesel powered passenger train, at Penn Station in New York City to begin his 1100 mile journey back to Memphis. During the 27 hour journey, he was accompanied by cousins Gene and Junior Smith, as well as photographer Alfred Wertheimer. The only respite came during a brief stop in Sheffield, AL. during which Elvis stretched his legs on the platform, grabbed some food and talked with some fans. Though the train would terminate at Union Station in Memphis, Elvis disembarked at White station on the outskirts of town, which allowed him to quietly walk the last couple of miles home. in the final photo you will see Elvis finally arrive at Audubon Drive on the morning of July 4th.
