🎣 Fishing League Didn’t Break Me — Day 86 Sober

We were barely a mile into fishing league tonight when the boat damn near sank. Water filled the floor, batteries nearly underwater. We had to beach it on an island and try to figure out what went wrong. Still don’t know.

And right by the landing on the way back… there’s a bar. Cold beer just sitting there calling my name.

But I didn’t go in.

86 days sober. That’s not just a number, that’s a promise I made to myself, my kids, my life. I didn’t come this far just to fold when it gets hard. I didn’t get sober for a challenge — I did it to become a better man. A better dad.

No fish. No weigh-in. No win tonight.

But I’m still winning.

I’m headed home. Gonna eat some pizza. Drink a pop. Hug my kids. Because even when the boat’s taking on water, The Average Dad keeps showing up.

Still here. Still sober. Still building something that matters.

... Read moreFishing is often seen as a relaxing pastime, but it can also pose challenges, both mentally and physically. While out on the water, distractions abound, from the temptation of cold drinks to the lure of giving up in tough situations. For many, the journey of sobriety is similar—one day at a time, filled with small victories and the constant battle against old habits. Maintaining sobriety isn’t merely about abstaining from alcohol; it is also about building resilience and finding joy in everyday moments. When faced with adversity, such as a boat taking on water, it’s vital to focus on problem-solving and staying grounded. In the realm of sobriety, these moments can serve as powerful reminders of personal strength and commitment. Engaging in activities like fishing can also provide therapeutic benefits, encouraging mindfulness and tranquility away from daily stresses. As a father, embodying the role of 'The Average Dad' means showing up not just for outings but for significant moments in your child's life—whether it’s sharing a slice of pizza or being present through the challenges. Building relationships is a cornerstone of recovery; spending time with family fosters a support system that is invaluable for anyone tackling their sobriety journey. With hashtags like #86DaysSober, #FishingLeague, and #DadLifeUnfiltered, many have connected over shared experiences, uplifting one another through community. It’s essential to highlight that sobriety is a continuous journey of growth, self-discovery, and the joy of simple wins. Celebrate those moments, stay connected with supports, and cherish the little victories that count in weaving a narrative of resilience and hope.
