Please don’t preach to me about discipline!

Discipline means two different things to people with and without ADHD. And frankly, that word can really piss me off if someone’s telling me that’s what it takes to accomplish something.

It’s not a discipline problem, it’s dopamine.

My brain doesn’t have the “on command” luxury.

Because if discipline was the answer, it would have worked by now.

... Read moreLiving with ADHD means dealing with a brain that doesn’t respond like others to typical motivation tools. I’ve tried countless morning routines, supplements, and self-help books—yet the struggle remains because it’s not a lack of effort, but a dopamine deficit. Dopamine is a key neurotransmitter that governs motivation and reward, but in ADHD brains, the production or reception of dopamine is often impaired. This explains why simply telling someone to 'be disciplined' or 'just do it' falls flat. What helps is creating systems that work *with* your brain chemistry rather than against it. For example, breaking tasks into very small pieces can trigger more frequent dopamine hits, making it easier to stay motivated. Using timers, checklists, or gamified apps can make starting and finishing tasks feel less daunting. It’s also important to structure your environment to reduce distractions and set up clear reminders. Another key point is self-compassion. The frustration of not meeting typical productivity expectations isn’t laziness or lack of discipline; it’s a neurological reality. Accepting this can reduce stress and help find customized strategies that fit your particular wiring. Medication, therapy, coaching, and lifestyle adjustments like exercise and diet can also support dopamine balance. Ultimately, the ADHD experience teaches us that success doesn’t come from willpower alone. It requires understanding and adapting to how your brain uniquely functions. So instead of preaching discipline, let’s focus on creating tools and habits that honor the science behind ADHD and promote real progress in daily life.
