... Read moreFrom my own experience, I've noticed that spending extended time on social media often leads me to perceive the world as more divided or alarming than it truly is. This happens because algorithms are designed to maximize engagement by showing content that evokes strong emotional reactions — often extremes — which are easier to remember and recall. This phenomenon, explained well by recent psychological insights, means that our brains start mistaking these amplified extremes for normal, everyday reality. For example, if your feed repeatedly shows highly negative news or polarizing opinions, your brain might conclude these views are prevalent everywhere, heightening feelings of anxiety or frustration. I found that taking deliberate breaks from social media and consciously diversifying the sources I engage with helps to recalibrate my perception and reduce stress. Moreover, understanding this psychological distortion can improve mental wellness by encouraging self-awareness. Recognizing that social media content is curated and filtered—not a direct reflection of reality—can empower users to maintain a healthier relationship with their feeds. It also highlights the importance of digital literacy: learning how algorithms work allows us to be more critical of what we see online. In practice, setting limits on usage time, following a variety of accounts with diverse viewpoints, and prioritizing real-world connections have all helped me combat the skewed perception caused by social media algorithms. Sharing these simple strategies with friends and community members has often sparked meaningful conversations about mental health and online habits.
