🍋 Rebuilding credit after divorce? Start here 👇

I talk to so many women who find out their credit doesn’t even look like theirs anymore after a divorce — joint accounts, missed payments that weren’t even their fault, a whole financial identity that feels like it belongs to someone else.

Here’s the exact 4-step process I walk my clients through:

✨ Step 1: Separate what’s actually yours — pull all 3 bureaus, check every account

✨ Step 2: Close joint accounts in WRITING — a decree alone doesn’t remove you

✨ Step 3: Watch for missed payments on accounts that were “his” — they can still hit your score

✨ Step 4: Rebuild fresh, in your name only — it’s a foundation, not a step backward

None of this means you did something wrong. It just means it’s time to rebuild.

... Read moreGoing through a divorce is challenging enough, but dealing with the financial aftermath—especially credit issues—can feel overwhelming. From personal experience, many women I’ve spoken with felt blindsided when they checked their credit reports and realized accounts they thought were closed were still open, or they were being penalized for missed payments on joint accounts they thought were no longer their responsibility. A key realization is that a divorce decree isn’t enough to protect your credit. You must take proactive steps such as obtaining your credit reports from all three major bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) to identify every account linked to you. Once you know what’s out there, closing joint accounts in writing is essential because until creditors are officially notified, you remain liable. Additionally, keep a close eye on accounts your ex-spouse was responsible for. Any missed payments can adversely affect your credit score, so monitoring these is critical. Setting up fraud alerts or credit monitoring services can help catch any negative activity early. Finally, rebuilding your credit involves starting fresh with accounts solely in your name. This foundational step is about empowerment, not setback. Building positive credit history through responsible use of credit cards or small loans can restore your financial health and open doors to future opportunities like buying a home or securing favorable interest rates. From personal experience, reaching out for a free credit consultation can provide tailored guidance and peace of mind in this transition. Remember, rebuilding credit after divorce is a journey, but with deliberate action, you regain control of your financial identity and set yourself up for long-term financial freedom.
