How I stopped waiting to feel “ready”

I used to say things like:

“I wish I was more motivated.”

Motivated to get up earlier.

Motivated to go to the gym.

Motivated to work on my goals.

But here’s what I’ve learned — motivation doesn’t come before you take action.

It comes because you take action.

For so long, I thought the people who were consistent just had something I didn’t.

More drive, more discipline, more willpower.

But they don’t.

They’ve just learned to do it even when they don’t feel like it.

My life changed when I stopped waiting for motivation and started building momentum.

Because once you start, even when it’s messy or inconvenient — the progress builds confidence.

And confidence builds motivation.

So if you’ve been waiting for the perfect time, the energy, the motivation… stop waiting.

Start now.

Start small.

Start tired.

But just start.

You don’t need to feel ready — you just need to show up for the version of you who already is. 🩶

Save this post for the days you don’t feel like showing up — and follow @TheCortisolCode for daily motivation, mindset shifts, and wellness tips that actually help you stay consistent. ✨

... Read moreMany people struggle with the idea of waiting to feel motivated before starting a task or pursuing a goal. However, motivation is often not the initial catalyst but rather a byproduct of taking the first steps. Neuroscience and psychology support this idea, revealing that action triggers dopamine release in the brain, which in turn enhances motivation and mood. This means that doing something, even a small or imperfect effort, can ignite a chain reaction of productivity and positive feelings. When it comes to habit formation, consistency plays a key role. Creating a routine of showing up daily, even if the effort is minimal, builds what experts call “behavioral momentum.” This momentum makes it easier to continue and gradually increases your willingness and enthusiasm to engage more deeply. For example, instead of waiting to feel energized to exercise, simply committing to five minutes a day can lead to longer sessions as your confidence grows. The concept of not waiting to feel ready also ties into overcoming perfectionism and fear of failure. Often, people delay action because they want the conditions to be ideal or fear they won’t perform well immediately. By starting despite these feelings, you shift your focus from outcomes to process, reducing anxiety and building resilience. The OCR text from the image suggests a phrase similar to "waiting for motivation." This aligns perfectly with the reflection shared in the article about how waiting indefinitely can stall progress. Taking any initial action—whether it’s getting out of bed earlier, going to the gym, or working on goals—breaks the cycle of waiting and creates opportunity for growth. For those interested in supporting their wellness journey, managing stress hormones like cortisol can influence motivation and energy levels. Practices such as mindfulness, adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, and moderate exercise help regulate cortisol, which in turn supports a more sustainable and consistent motivation flow. Integrating these wellness habits with the mindset shift of starting before feeling ready can lead to long-term success. In essence, the key takeaway is clear: don't wait to be motivated. Start small, start imperfect, and let the action itself generate the motivation you need to keep going. This approach not only changes your habits but strengthens your self-belief and paves the way toward achieving your personal and wellness goals.
