I used to think feeling tired all the time, being on edge, craving caffeine just to function, and holding onto weight no matter what I did was just “being in my 30s.”

I assumed I was doing something wrong.

Or that this was just my new normal.

Turns out… it was my cortisol.

When your stress hormones are running high, your body holds onto everything. Stress. Exhaustion. Inflammation. And yes… stubborn weight. Your sleep gets worse, your patience gets shorter, and your energy tanks no matter how healthy you try to be.

Once I started supporting my cortisol and nervous system, everything shifted. My energy. My mood. My sleep. My patience. My body.

I used to believe that too, until I discovered the crucial role that cortisol, one of our primary stress hormones, plays in how our body manages energy, inflammation, and metabolism. Cortisol is often dubbed the ‘stress hormone’ because it helps your body respond to stressful situations by increasing blood sugar and suppressing non-essential functions. But when cortisol remains elevated for prolonged periods, it creates a cascade of health issues: persistent tiredness, increased anxiety, difficulty sleeping, inflammation, and yes, the frustrating accumulation of belly fat. What surprised me the most was how little I knew about cortisol’s impact on daily wellbeing. As my cortisol levels stayed elevated, my body clung to fat stores as a protective mechanism, and my energy bottomed out despite healthy eating and exercise. This hormonal imbalance wasn’t just physical—it affected my patience, mood, and ability to focus. Supporting my cortisol balance required a multi-faceted approach. Prioritizing restful sleep, practicing mindfulness and stress reduction techniques like meditation, and integrating adaptogenic herbs helped lower my stress response. I also paid attention to nutrient-rich foods that support adrenal health—foods rich in vitamin C, B vitamins, and magnesium. One key takeaway is that if you’re doing all the ‘right’ things but still feel exhausted or stuck, it might not be a lack of effort but rather an underlying hormonal imbalance needing attention. Listening to your body and understanding cortisol’s role can be empowering in reclaiming your energy and wellbeing.
