Happy December from the oranges! As always, the corn and squirrel/bird food is wildlife safe from Tractor Supply and Lowes. We don’t regularly feed them, just an occasional treat, we let them forage for their own nutrition🐿️ Squirrels are very aware of their surroundings. They aren’t really afraid of the cats because they can sense there’s no danger. If they see an outdoor cat, they run.🙂🧡🐱 #orangecat #cat #catenrichment #catdad #orangecatbehavior
December is a wonderful time to appreciate the subtle interactions between local wildlife and our pets, especially in cozy backyard environments. Feeding wildlife with care is crucial, and using wildlife-safe food from trusted stores like Tractor Supply and Lowes ensures that animals such as squirrels and birds receive nutritious treats without harmful additives. Squirrels are notably intelligent and highly alert to their surroundings, adapting their behavior based on perceived threats. They can distinguish between safe and dangerous animals—outdoor cats, for example, often do not pose a significant threat if they maintain respectful boundaries, and squirrels quickly learn this. However, if a squirrel detects a cat behaving aggressively or encroaching too closely, it will naturally run away to avoid danger. These dynamics highlight the importance of responsible pet ownership and wildlife interaction. By allowing squirrels to forage for their own nutrition while providing occasional safe treats, we support their health and natural habits without causing dependency. Observing such behaviors offers valuable insights into animal intelligence and coexistence, making outdoor time enriching for both pets and wildlife enthusiasts. Sharing these observations helps build community knowledge about wildlife-friendly practices and enhances our connection to nature. Whether you are a cat owner, wildlife lover, or simply appreciate peaceful garden moments, understanding how squirrels and cats interact safely can improve how we care for the wildlife visiting our yards during the chilly month of December.
