Maybe Belief Doesn’t Come First

I’ve been thinking about this question a lot: what comes first, belief or action?

We hear “fake it till you make it,” but for deeply introspective people with high standards and low self-belief, that can feel impossible.

So maybe there’s another way to look at it: make it until you believe it.

Because the truth is, you can doubt yourself and still show up. You can question your talent, feel unworthy, fear failure, and still move forward.

You can struggle to feel proud, struggle to feel gratitude, and still end up in a place your younger self never could’ve imagined.

Sometimes belief is not the starting point. Sometimes it’s the byproduct of not giving up on yourself.

... Read moreIn my personal journey, I've found that waiting to believe in myself before taking action often led to prolonged hesitation and missed opportunities. Instead, I began to embrace the concept that acting first—showing up even when uncertain—could cultivate genuine belief over time. This approach can be a game-changer for anyone grappling with self-doubt or low confidence. For example, when starting a new hobby or professional role, I rarely felt fully prepared or worthy at the outset. However, by committing to the process and allowing myself room to learn and fail, I gradually built competence and pride. This shift from doubting to believing was not instantaneous but a natural byproduct of persistence. Moreover, embracing action before belief aligns with the mindset shift that growth is a journey rather than a fixed state. It encourages resilience: continuing forward despite fear of failure or feeling unworthy. This mindset has helped me stay motivated on difficult days, reinforcing that progress often requires pushing through discomfort. It’s also important to acknowledge that struggling with self-belief is common, especially for introspective individuals with high personal standards. By adopting "make it until you believe it," you grant yourself permission to be imperfect and still valuable. This gradual build-up of confidence can lead to surprising outcomes—places and achievements once thought impossible. Ultimately, belief and action exist in a dynamic relationship. Taking small, consistent steps despite doubt is a powerful way to foster self-belief organically. I encourage others facing similar challenges to experiment with this approach. Show up every day, even when unsure, and watch belief emerge from your persistent effort and inner growth journey.
