I’m fine! Really I’m fine!

The persistent chill in the air and the dwindling daylight often bring with them a familiar companion for me: that profound, lingering emotional "limpness." It's more than just feeling tired; it's a deep-seated lack of motivation, a dulling of my usual spark, and sometimes, a creeping numbness that makes everything feel a little less real. I know I'm not alone in this feeling, especially when seasonal depression starts to make its presence known. I find myself often saying, "I'm fine!" It's almost a reflex, a shield I put up to avoid confronting the swirling feelings inside. The truth is, it's incredibly tough to acknowledge that something deeper is at play. The thought of confronting childhood issues or admitting I'm feeling truly "depressed and misunderstood" can be overwhelming. There's this internal voice that says, "just repress it!" — a voice that promises a temporary peace, a way to avoid the awkwardness or apathy I sometimes feel towards booking myself therapy. It’s a convenient excuse, isn't it? "I'm too awkward," "I'm too apathetic to book myself therapy," I tell myself, even as I complain about my struggles. This pattern of pushing all my problems down has become a familiar, if unhealthy, coping mechanism. I convince myself that if I ignore them, they'll just go away. But the reality is, they don't. They just accumulate, festering beneath the surface until, as I sometimes fear, "one day I'll explode!" Or, perhaps even more insidiously, "repressing makes me feel nothing," which, in its own way, is a kind of emotional "limpness" – a detachment from both joy and sorrow. It’s easy to believe "I'm fine, I don't need therapy," when you’ve numbed yourself to the very feelings that indicate a need for help. Lately, though, I've been trying to find small ways to acknowledge this "eternal limpness" without immediately feeling pressured to fix everything at once. It’s about gentle self-awareness. For me, that sometimes looks like simply observing how the colder, darker days affect my energy levels and mood, rather than fighting it. Instead of forcing myself to be productive, I might allow for more rest. I’ve found that even small things, like making sure my living space is well-lit or taking a short walk during the brief daylight hours, can make a subtle difference. Connecting with others, even virtually, can also break through that feeling of isolation and "misunderstanding." Sharing a casual chat with a friend who understands the seasonal struggle can feel incredibly validating and help chip away at the sense of being "alone" with these feelings. It's not about solving everything overnight or suddenly becoming a therapy advocate, but about recognizing that this persistent emotional drain is real and deserves attention, even if it's just from myself first. It's a journey, and every small step toward acknowledging the truth of how I feel, rather than just saying "I'm fine," feels like a tiny victory against that lingering "limpness." I'm learning that sometimes, admitting you're not always fine is the strongest thing you can do.
