How I get out of bed as a quadriplegic 🤍
Living with quadriplegia presents daily challenges, especially with tasks that many take for granted like getting out of bed. From my experience, having the right assistive technology and support system is essential. One indispensable tool is the ceiling lift, which safely transfers me from my bed into my power wheelchair. This ceiling lift can hold up to 300 pounds, providing necessary strength and stability during the transfer. The sling used during the lift is carefully positioned to ensure comfort and security. My assistant—often my mom—helps by attaching the sling and guiding the lift. Since the armrests on my Paiseec power wheelchair don’t lift up, this consistent routine allows me to be lowered directly into the chair smoothly. I appreciate this wheelchair not only for its beautiful color but also its ergonomic design that allows me to sit comfortably and maintain good posture. Adjustments like positioning my feet and fixing footrests properly also make a big difference in comfort throughout the day. It’s important to acknowledge that each individual’s needs vary, and what works best for someone else might differ. For me, having such a reliable combination of equipment and a caring assistant has greatly improved my independence and quality of life. If you or your loved one is navigating similar mobility challenges, exploring various types of lifts and wheelchair options can be invaluable. Seeking advice from occupational therapists and trying different equipment can help tailor solutions to personal needs. Remember, adaptation and patience are key when developing a routine that makes transfers safe, efficient, and dignified.
