It’s Bradford Pear trimming season.

To properly trim your Bradford Pear, use a chainsaw to make a cut on the main trunk, as flush to the ground as possible. #BadNewsBrad

... Read moreOkay, so you've seen my 'trimming' tip for that notorious Bradford Pear, and maybe you're thinking, 'Is that really all there is to it?' Well, honestly, my experience with these trees led me to that drastic conclusion! But let's dig a little deeper into why so many of us have a love-hate (mostly hate!) relationship with these trees and what traditional trimming actually involves, versus a complete removal. First off, if you've ever been near a Bradford Pear in bloom, you know about *that smell*. It's truly unforgettable, and not in a good way! This infamous scent is one of the main reasons they've earned so many 'bad news' memes online. Beyond the smell, these trees have some serious structural issues. Their branches grow at narrow angles, making them incredibly prone to splitting and breaking, especially during storms. I've personally seen more than one Bradford Pear split right down the middle, creating a huge mess and potential hazard. This weak structure is a big reason why people often look for ways to 'trim' them back aggressively or, like me, consider removing them entirely. They also spread aggressively, taking over natural areas and outcompeting native plants – truly becoming a nuisance. Now, if you're not quite ready for the full removal, and you want to try to manage your Bradford Pear, traditional pruning is a very different process. The best time to prune a Bradford Pear tree is usually in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. This allows the tree to heal quickly and reduces stress. When pruning, the goal is often to improve the tree's structure by removing those weak, narrow-angled branches. You want to make cuts at the branch collar, avoiding leaving stubs or cutting too close to the trunk. Focus on removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and thin out the canopy to improve air circulation and light penetration. The idea is to create a stronger, more open structure, though it's a constant battle with these trees' natural growth habit. However, if you're like me and have decided that the best 'trim' is a complete removal, then you're essentially taking a different approach. My original post hinted at using a chainsaw for this, and yes, for a full tree removal, tools like a powerful Husqvarna chainsaw can be essential. But safety is paramount! Always wear appropriate protective gear—gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, and sturdy footwear. Before making any cut, especially on the main trunk as flush to the ground as possible, ensure the area is clear of people and pets. If the tree is large or near structures, it's often best to consult with or hire a professional arborist to ensure a safe and efficient removal. They have the expertise and equipment to handle complex situations. After the tree is down, you'll also need to consider stump removal or treatment to prevent regrowth. There are various methods, from grinding the stump to applying herbicides. Once it's gone, you have the perfect opportunity to replace it with a native, more ecosystem-friendly tree that will not only thrive but also contribute positively to your local environment. My journey with my Bradford Pear was a learning experience, and while my 'trimming' advice might seem extreme, it came from years of dealing with its issues. Ultimately, whether you prune or remove, understanding the tree's nature is key!
