... Read moreAs a parent of a child with disabilities, I have come to understand that embracing both love and grief can coexist in our journey. It is not about choosing one over the other but about acknowledging the complex mix of emotions that come with raising a child who faces unique challenges. Many of us, like fellow medical moms and disability advocates, find comfort in sharing our experiences within supportive communities. It can be healing to express the joy of seeing our children thrive in their own ways while also mourning the expectations and dreams we once had. Recognizing this dual reality helps us process our feelings more fully and avoids the isolation that sometimes accompanies special needs parenting. From my own experience, finding balance means allowing myself to feel sadness without guilt and celebrating every milestone no matter how small. It also involves advocating tirelessly for our children’s needs, educating others about disability, and fostering an environment where acceptance flourishes. Connecting with other parents who understand these emotions has been invaluable. We exchange advice, lend encouragement, and remind one another that loving our children unconditionally doesn’t erase the grief. Instead, it creates a foundation for resilience and deeper connection. If you are navigating similar feelings, know that your emotions are valid. Loving your child exactly as they are and grieving the life you thought you’d have can both be true—and it's okay to hold space for both.
