How to Budget If You’re Bad With Money

If budgeting has never worked for you…it’s probably because you made it too complicated.

You don’t need to be perfect, disciplined or “good with money.” You just need a system you’ll actually stick to. Start simple and consistent. Save this post for later and follow for real-life money tips that actually make sense. 😊

... Read moreBudgeting doesn't have to be complicated or intimidating, especially if you've struggled to find a method that fits your lifestyle. One approach that I found incredibly helpful is breaking down your finances into three simple buckets: Needs, Wants, and Future You. This framework allows you to create clear boundaries without feeling overwhelmed. For example, categorize your essential expenses like rent, utilities, and groceries under Needs. Then allocate a portion for Wants, such as dining out or occasional shopping trips, so you still enjoy yourself but within limits. Finally, Future You is where your savings, debt repayments, or investments go. This structure keeps things organized and motivates you by showing how each dollar contributes to different parts of your life. Another practical tip is to set a weekly spending limit instead of a monthly one. Weekly limits can make managing expenses feel more actionable and prevent impulsive overspending, which often happens when the budget period is too long to track effectively. Automating your finances also reduces stress. Setting autopay for bills and automatic transfers to savings will help you avoid late fees and build your savings consistently without needing daily attention. Checking your finances once a week—rather than obsessively every day—strikes a good balance between staying informed and not getting overwhelmed. From personal experience, these simple changes transformed my approach to budgeting. They are manageable yet powerful steps anyone can take regardless of their financial knowledge or past habits. Keep it simple, stay consistent, and remember: you're not bad with money, you just need a system that works for you.

Also Pay Yourself First. Make a separate high yield savings account and make an automatic transfer to that account once your paycheck drops. It can be small 20$ or large 100$. In some cases look at you deposit for your income and see if you can split your paycheck. Doesn’t need to be half it could 75-25% or if that is hard 85-15%.

Thanks for the tips. I was just this morning saying to myself that I needed to start saving and learn to budget, but didn't know where to begin and yes I did use that phrase "I'm bad with money I like to spend" especially if on my way to work I come across a Hobby Lobby, TJMaxx or a Michaels.
