My family absolutely adores Thinkery, and as a mom of two under two, I've picked up a few tricks to make our Austin toddler adventures even smoother! While Thinkery is a phenomenal children's museum and truly a 10/10 for its interactive science and water exhibits, Austin has so many other gems perfect for little ones. If you're planning a trip to Thinkery, here are my personal hacks: Go early! Weekday mornings are usually less crowded, giving your toddler more space to explore freely. And seriously, pack a full change of clothes – for *everyone*! That amazing water exhibit with its vibrant, colorful toys and the large water wheel is irresistible, and despite the smocks provided, little hands and feet will find a way to get soaked. The wet floor is part of the fun, but dry clothes for the ride home are a lifesaver. I've even seen parents bring their own small waterproof mats for little ones to sit on while playing with the water. Don't forget snacks and a water bottle; little explorers burn a lot of energy! I also really appreciate their calming rooms – they're a lifesaver for overstimulated moments or if you need a quiet space to nurse comfortably away from the bustle. Beyond Thinkery, Austin is brimming with other fantastic activities. For outdoor fun, you can't beat Zilker Park. My toddlers love riding the Zilker Zephyr miniature train and spending hours at the playground. The playground near Barton Springs has fantastic swings and slides suitable for various ages. In the warmer months, the shallow areas of Barton Springs Pool or one of Austin's many splash pads (like the one at Pease Park or Mueller Lake Park) are perfect for cooling off and letting them splash around. We always bring a small bucket and shovel for sand play around the edges too, turning a simple visit into a mini beach adventure! When we need an indoor escape that's not a museum, the Austin Public Library branches offer fantastic story times and play areas. They're free, engaging, and a great way to meet other parents. Sometimes, just a coffee shop with a small dedicated play corner, or even an indoor play gym like Catch Air, can be a godsend on a rainy or super hot day when outdoor play isn't an option. My biggest tip for navigating Austin with toddlers is to keep it low-key. Don't try to cram too much into one day. Focus on one main activity, bring plenty of snacks, and be prepared for spontaneous diaper changes or meltdowns. Having a 'go bag' ready with essentials like wipes, extra snacks, and a small toy can make all the difference. Austin truly is a wonderful city for families, and with a little planning, you can create unforgettable memories with your little adventurers!
