They said I only shoot women… so I checked the receipts.

As a photographer, I often hear assumptions about the kinds of subjects I prefer to shoot—one being that I only shoot women. To challenge this stereotype, I took a close look at my portfolio and realized that while I do have many photographs featuring women, my work is far more diverse than what people assume. This experience made me reflect on how easy it is for others to pigeonhole creatives based on limited perception. From my perspective, shooting women offers a unique vibrancy and emotional depth, but expanding beyond that has enriched my skills tremendously. Over time, I've incorporated various other subjects, including landscapes, urban scenes, and different kinds of portraits that capture a wide range of human emotions and stories. Checking the 'receipts'—or reviewing my body of work—has been illuminating. It’s also important to note how embracing a broad scope of subjects not only enhances creative growth but also broadens the audience and impact of one’s photography. To anyone facing similar assumptions, I recommend diving deep into your archives, celebrate the diversity of your work, and share that narrative confidently. Additionally, I’ve observed that platforms like TikTok featuring photographers help challenge these narrow stereotypes by showcasing diverse artistic styles and subjects. Engaging with communities through hashtags like #DoubleAgent, #wlw, #photographersoftiktok, and #iknowball has allowed me to connect with other artists breaking norms and expanding perspectives in photography.
