Part 1️⃣ 3 LTC SLP tips that BLEW MY MIND 🤯

Part 1 ✨ 3 LTC SLP tips that blew my mind and have absolutely changed how I provide care. This will be a 4 Part series of tips that I've learned over the years as a practicing long-term care SLP.

Please check out the other creators I mention in this video on TikTok or Instagram! Their content is fantastic and definitely worth a follow 🙂 I learned the calendar window trick from a BelightCare video back in 2021, I think (yes, I've been using it since then), and solidified my understanding of the brief trick from Haley's video many moons ago!

... Read moreAs someone who has worked extensively in long-term care settings as a speech-language pathologist, I can attest to how certain simple yet powerful tips can dramatically change the quality and efficiency of care we provide. The calendar window trick, for example, is a game-changer for cognitively supporting patients with memory and temporal orientation challenges. By strategically structuring calendar cues in therapy sessions and daily interactions, I’ve seen patients show meaningful improvements in engagement and awareness of time. Another tip that truly enhanced my practice is the brief trick, which involves delivering concise, targeted communication and therapy prompts tailored to the patient’s current cognitive and physical status. This approach reduces fatigue and maximizes therapeutic impact—very important factors in long-term care populations. Additionally, I found that following and learning from expert creators on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram can be invaluable. They share practical, evidence-based tips that complement traditional learning and often introduce creative, real-world applicable tools. Over the years, integrating these insights has not only improved patients’ therapy outcomes but also made my practice more rewarding. I encourage fellow LTC SLPs to explore these tips and continue learning from a community of professionals dedicated to improving care in nursing homes and similar settings. Consistently applying such strategies fosters a more client-centered approach that respects the unique challenges and strengths of those we serve in long-term care.

Articulation 101: Manner (Part 1) - The HOW
Now let’s talk about airflow. Some sounds stop the air. Some sounds stretch it out. Some sounds push it through your nose. That’s called MANNER. If this breaks down, you might hear: • slurred speech • weak sounds • air “leaking” where it shouldn’t This is HUGE in dysarthria and Park

Articulation 101: PLACE, Part 2 🗣️
Still working on placement—because this is where a LOT of errors come from. If the tongue isn’t hitting the right spot, the sound can’t come out correctly. That’s why cues like: “put your tongue here” “lift it up” “touch behind your teeth” …actually work. We’re training LOCATION.

Voicing is the 3rd part of articulation, and it is just as important as Place and Manner! Voicing plays a KEY ROLE in our ability to produce sound to communicate. Talking, and the subsequent movement of the vocal cords, is how we actually produce sound. Voicing is the word to describe that soun

Where your tongue goes matters more than you think. “P” and “T” aren’t different by accident—they’re made in completely different places in your mouth. If placement is off, you’ll hear: • substitutions (“tat” for “cat”) • distortions • unclear speech This shows up in BOTH: 👶 kids
