Dust if you must is one of my favorite poems ♥️
•
Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be better
To paint a picture, or write a letter,
Bake a cake, or plant a seed;
Ponder the difference between want and need?
•
Dust if you must, but there's not much time,
With rivers to swim, and mountains to climb;
Music to hear, and books to read;
Friends to cherish, and life to lead.
•
Dust if you must, but the world's out there
With the sun in your eyes, and the wind in your hair;
A flutter of snow, a shower of rain,
This day will not come around again.
•
Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
Old age will come and it's not kind.
And when you go (and go you must)
You, yourself, will make more dust

Reading the poem 'Dust If You Must' really resonated with me, especially as it highlights a choice we often face daily: whether to get caught up in trivial tasks or to savor meaningful moments. The poem gently nudges us to prioritize painting a picture, writing a letter, or planting a seed—essentially investing time in creative and nurturing activities that enrich our lives. I’ve found that applying this mindset has helped me feel more fulfilled. Instead of stressing about keeping every corner spotless, I've been trying to spend more time outdoors—whether it’s climbing a nearby hill or simply enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. These tiny shifts make a huge difference in my mood and outlook. Moreover, the poem underlines the urgency of embracing life’s experiences now, because as it states, "Old age will come and it’s not kind." This reminder to cherish the present is so powerful. It encourages deep reflection on what truly matters—friends, music, books, and adventures—rather than getting lost in endless chores. The poetic imagery of "rivers to swim" and "mountains to climb" feels like an invitation to actively engage with nature and life itself. It inspires me to make the most of this day that "will not come around again" and to choose experiences that nurture my growth and happiness. In essence, this poem serves as a beautiful meditation on the balance between responsibilities and living fully. It inspires me to be more intentional with my time, focusing on relationships and passions that create lasting memories rather than dusting surfaces that will inevitably gather dust again. It’s a timely reminder to lead a life rich with meaning and joy.
