I moved to Michigan from south west Florida 36 days ago and today is my second day of work! ALSO, it’s not the DMV or the secretary OF state it’s the SECRETARIASTATE. All one word. See, still learning all of the Michigan things. Okay love you bye #michigan #michigander #michigancheck #michiganders #michiganthings
Moving to a new state like Michigan from a very different place such as southwest Florida can be quite an adventure. The weather change alone is noticeable, with Michigan offering more distinct seasons—including snowy winters and vibrant autumns—that really highlight the beauty of the area. One fun but surprising discovery I've made is the local terminology. For example, here the Secretary of State’s office is often playfully mentioned as the "SECRETARIASTATE," all one word, something I had never heard before! Beyond the terminology, embracing the local culture is key to feeling at home. Michiganders have deep pride in their state's natural landmarks—like Mackinaw, famous for its iconic bridge and stunning views. Many locals also sport green and maize colors proudly, a nod to the University of Michigan’s rich sports tradition. Getting to know the community has been an important part of my transition. People are welcoming, and the pace is a bit different from Florida—less rush, more of a community feel. Activities like jogging along lakefront trails or enjoying the changing seasons by doing simple exercises like squats outside have become part of my routine to stay active and engaged. I’m still learning daily about the Michigan lifestyle and the little things that make it unique, but it’s these discoveries that make this move exciting. For anyone planning a similar move, I’d recommend embracing the local lingo, exploring nature’s offerings, and connecting with locals to truly experience all that Michigan has to offer.
