My Couch Regrets + What I’d Buy Now

When we lived in an apartment, our sectional felt like the obvious choice. One big cozy piece, easy to lounge on, worked great in a smaller space.

But now that we’re in our home, I’ve realized… it’s just not the best fit anymore.

Here’s why:

👎 It overwhelms the space and limits layout options

👎 It’s gotten so beat up between our toddler and dog

👎 Only the bottom cushions are washable — not ideal with little messes and pet hair

👎 It lacks texture and dimension — the whole room feels kind of flat

What I’d get now:

✔️ A washable couch with two comfy accent chairs and a coffee table

✔️ More texture, more flexibility, and easier to clean = a win in every way

If you’re furniture shopping, don’t feel pressured to go straight to the big sectional. Think about your space and your season of life. 👶🐶

Would you go with a sectional again? Or have you made the switch too?

... Read moreWhen I first pictured my dream living room, a sleek, modern L-shape sofa was always at the center of it. They look so chic in magazines, right? But what I've learned firsthand is that choosing the perfect sofa, especially an L-shape, is about so much more than just aesthetics, particularly when your home becomes a playground for little monsters and furry friends. My initial excitement about a huge, cozy sectional quickly turned into daily struggles, making me wish I'd thought through a few things. If you're eyeing a modern L-shape sofa, here are some crucial points I wish someone had told me. First, consider the actual layout flexibility. While my sectional felt perfect in our apartment, once we moved to a larger house, it became this immovable elephant, dictating furniture placement rather than adapting to it. I now realize how much I value the ability to reconfigure my living space, something separate sofas and accent chairs easily offer. This flexibility is a game-changer for hosting, redecorating, or just creating different zones within your living area. Then there's the fabric dilemma. With monsters (aka my toddler and dog!) running around, spills and pet hair are a daily reality. My previous sectional had fixed cushions that were impossible to thoroughly clean, leading to constant stress. My top tip? Invest in a washable couch! Look for performance fabrics like Crypton or Sunbrella, or even slipcovered options with removable covers that can go straight into the washing machine. Trust me, saving your sanity from scrubbing stains is worth every penny for busy households. It's a non-negotiable for durability and hygiene. Another aspect I overlooked was texture and visual interest. My old L-shape sofa was a solid block of color and material, making the whole room feel flat and uninspired. Now, I'm all about creating a dynamic space using different textures and furniture pieces. Pairing a smaller, comfortable sofa with two stylish accent chairs and a versatile coffee table not only breaks up the visual monotony but also provides more comfortable and varied seating for guests without sacrificing a cozy feel. It also gives you more opportunities to introduce personality through different colors, materials, and patterns. Finally, think long-term. Your 'season of life' changes, and your furniture should ideally adapt with you. What works for a single person or a couple might not work for a growing family. Before committing to a large, fixed L-shape sectional, ask yourself: Is it durable enough for everyday family use? Can it be easily cleaned and maintained? Will it still fit my lifestyle and home aesthetic in five years? If I had considered these questions back in March 2021 when we got our sectional, I might have made different choices. Learning from my sectional regrets has definitely shaped my future furniture shopping. Sometimes, less (or at least more modular and washable!) is truly more when it comes to living room furniture, especially with a lively household.

Honestly, this just made me rethink why I always default to huge couches. Sometimes less is more, especially when you want your space to actually feel like your vibe.

My sectional is perfect for its place, which is being the general seat and greet of the living room. I searched and searched til I found just the right one, perfect color, chaise, etc.

I hate to say it, but I regret getting a sectional! they can be a great option if you need lots of comfy seating for guests, but they take up a lot of space & limit layout flexibility. if I were redesigning my living room, I’d go for a smaller slipcover sofa with a couple of accent chairs in

Couch regrets and what I’d buy instead!
I absolutely love how comfortable a sectional couch is, but if were buying one today it would be an "L" shape and in a linen fabric, those two details (I feel) are much more aesthetically pleasing. Our current couch is from Potato Barn, a home decor store location in Phoenix. #lemon8partn
