... Read moreAfter my delightful visit to Edgar's Bakery, I just had to share more about what makes this place a Birmingham gem! While my initial post focused on the incredible strawberry and chocolate decadence cupcakes, there's so much more to explore.
First off, let's talk about the variety. Walking into Edgar's, you're immediately greeted by a display case overflowing with temptations. Beyond the classic Chocolate Decadence and Strawberry cupcakes I tried (which were heavenly, by the way!), I spotted so many other flavors that looked equally amazing. They had Lemon cupcakes, vibrant Red Velvet, rich Peanut Butter, fun Sundae cupcakes, and even a tempting German Chocolate. Each one seemed perfectly crafted, with beautiful frosting designs that are almost too pretty to eat! Prices are super reasonable, usually around $3.50-$4.00 per cupcake, which feels like a steal for the quality.
But Edgar's isn't just about cupcakes. Their decorated cakes are truly showstoppers. I saw everything from elegant, simple designs to incredibly detailed, colorful creations perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, or any special occasion. While I didn't get a full cake this time, I overheard other customers raving about their wedding and birthday cakes. If you're looking for a special occasion cake, I'd definitely recommend checking out their different sizes and flavor options – they seem to have a flavor for every palate. The OCR also mentioned their extensive cake menu, and it really shows in person!
And the pastries! Oh my goodness, the display cases also featured an array of other delicious treats. I saw delicate Petit Fours, flaky Chocolate Rugelach, savory Cheese Straws (a Southern classic!), and a huge selection of cookies and brownies. The decorated sugar cookies were especially charming, perfect for gifts or just a little pick-me-up. It's clear they put a lot of care into all their baked goods, not just the cakes and cupcakes.
For those wondering about the experience, the Homewood location (2713 18th St S) has such a welcoming vibe. The exterior with its classic black and white striped awning is iconic. It's a fantastic spot to pick up treats for a party or just grab a coffee and a pastry for yourself. The staff are always friendly and helpful, making the visit even sweeter.
When it comes to my top tip, as I mentioned, anything with strawberry is a winner. But I’d also say don’t shy away from their chocolate options – the Chocolate Decadence cupcake was truly decadent! If you're comparing Edgar's to other bakeries like what you might find at Walmart or Whole Foods, Edgar's offers that artisanal, homemade quality that truly stands out. It's not just a dessert; it's an experience. They really focus on quality ingredients and classic recipes.
I'm already planning my next trip back to try more flavors, perhaps a slice of one of their famous cakes or some of those tempting Cheese Straws. Edgar's Bakery is definitely a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth in Birmingham!
