This new journey I am on is pushing me to start releasing the things that I keep to myself to help others. Being a dad is one of the hardest things in the world, but being a black dad is the hardest. I want to create a safe place for fathers to listen to someone going through the things they are going through. I hope you all enjoy my new series, "Smack Dad in the Middle." I'm just the messenger. #blackfathers #poetry #monologue
Becoming a father is a transformative experience, and adding the dimension of being a Black dad brings a set of challenges that are often unspoken but deeply felt. Through my own journey, I’ve come to realize that the role of a father isn’t just about providing for a family materially, but offering emotional support and resilience even when life feels overwhelming. One thing that stands out in this journey is the constant balance between strength and vulnerability. It’s easy to show the world a perfect front, but the truth lies in honest reflections about fears, hopes, and the pressure to be a role model. I’ve found that many Black fathers feel the weight of societal expectations combined with personal dreams—and sometimes it feels like carrying a heavy load alone. The idea of creating a “safe place” for fathers resonates because, historically, fatherhood conversations haven’t always been inclusive or open. Whether it’s through poetry, monologues, or just sharing stories like in the "Smack Dad in the Middle" series, finding a community where fathers can express their doubts and triumphs is healing. From my experience, one of the hardest battles is dispelling the internalized fear that drives us to constantly chase perfection. Sometimes, the fear of failing our families leads to exhaustion, as captured in lines about the struggle to balance silence and communication with loved ones. But failure doesn’t define us; it refines us. I also relate deeply to the metaphor of living in the gray area—beyond dividing lines of race or identity—to focus instead on values like right and wrong, empathy, and perspective. Being able to put myself in others’ shoes has been a powerful tool not just in parenting but in navigating life’s complexities. Lastly, I encourage fellow fathers to embrace moments of peace and silence, which can be a refuge amidst chaos. Sharing experiences openly, even those about mental health and emotional struggles, can build stronger bonds at home and within communities. This journey of fatherhood is not just about the legacy we leave but how we nurture growth, love, and resilience every step of the way.

Beautiful, and this is really needed, a safe space for our brothers!
